Maybe you guys already knew about this – the results of the latest scientific researches prove that sleeping together with the partner has a positive effect on mental health, memory, concentration and problem solving skills. The researchers found that couples who every night go to sleep in the same bed was the best sleep quality, in particular it concerned the rapid phase of sleep REM (rapid eye movement) phase associated with dreams. Recall that the phase of the REM occurs 90 minutes after falling asleep and alternates between the other four stages of deep and light sleep. Poor sleep quality, on the other hand, is associated with Alzheimer's disease and depression.
As shown by the results of a study published in the journal , a good relationship with a partner, apparently, affect the quality of sleep. As explained by Henning Johannes Drews – the study's lead author and a postdoctoral fellow of the Center for integrative psychiatry in Germany, obtained in the course of work, the findings are a departure from conventional wisdom and previous research on how sleeping with a partner affect sleep quality. In the study, 12 couples were invited to spend the night in the sleep lab. Using polysomnography, a type of sleep study that records brain waves, movement, oxygen levels in the blood – the researchers monitored the sleep of subjects invited. The pair slept in the laboratory four nights for two weekends. In one weekend they slept in two different rooms on single beds. Next – in the same room on two seperate beds. Each couple was given two sets of sheets and two blankets.

When couples sleep together, they reported improvement in sleep quality. However, the researchers found no differences in such indicators as needed to sleep. However, they found that the time of REM sleep increased. The Researchers see two working explanations to reduce disturbances of REM sleep, when partners sleep apart. The second explanation is psychological: partner maybe just to make us feel safe. Overall, a relaxing and safe environment promotes deep sleep.
But what other reasons can explain the quality of sleep in the same bed with your spouse? But even when the researchers excluded cases of night waking, they still found that 47.5% of REM in both partners was synchronized with each other.

As suggested by the authors of scientific work, it is the depth of relationship may explain why sleep phase both partners are synchronized, when they are sleeping. However, this is just a trend – it cannot be completely confirmed by experimental data. Moreover, the relationship between the joint quality sleep and REM sleep has its roots in evolution. From an evolutionary point of view, sleep is definitely a social condition. If you look at many primates, more traditional society, or historical descriptions of European societies, you will see that co-sleeping – a common occurrence. Thus, for centuries, sleep and social factors were related.
Since this is a small pilot study, the data obtained is not accurate enough to apply to all. In addition, the study has several limitations, as the experiment involved only heterosexual couples. Finally, scientists believe that the sharing of beds is probably not the way to improve sleep if you have apnea, and other diseases. Still, the new results showed that the combined use of beds does not necessarily mean the lack of a good night's rest, and Vice versa.
