Who found the link between sugary drinks and premature death Source:

Diet drinks more dangerous than we think

It is considered that irreparable harm carry alcoholic beverages. But if it comes to the different kinds of sodas and other sweet drinks as a rule doctors say about the development of obesity or . But a new study conducted by experts from the world health organization (who), says that drinking just two glasses of diet (i.e., containing no sugar, and sweeteners) drinks a day increases the risk of premature death.

Why are soft drinks dangerous?

The new study was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. According to our colleagues, the new finding was attended by more than 450 thousand people from 10 countries. For all these people, scientists have observed for several years. A number of parameters for the experiment were divided into several groups. But most of all scholars interested in one group of people — those who consumed per day 2 or more glasses artificially . In the end it turned out that this group the mortality rate was significantly higher than in people who do not abuse allegedly safe diet drinks.

The authors declare that the connection between diet drinks and mortality persists among people with normal weight and other health indicators like cholesterol in the blood. Thus the authors conclude that the sweeteners contained in the drinks can be hazardous to health.

As for the numbers, those who consumed 250 milliliters or more drinks with artificial sweeteners a day had a 26% higher risk of dying during the next 16 years. The death rate from cardiovascular disease increased by 52% in the same group of people. The interesting thing here is that the people who drank the same amount of drink a day, but drink with natural sugar, had a higher risk of mortality. It was higher only by 8%.

As stated by the head of research Neil Murphy, scientists still do not understand why this is happening. However, experts have suggested that artificial sweeteners in diet drinks can cause the development of glucose intolerance and thereby increase the level of insulin in the blood.

The Main idea of our work — drink water. Avoid sugary drinks and be careful with the use of artificial sweeteners. Water — the safe thing to do. Tea and coffee are also fine.

Sweeteners may not be as useful as one might think.

Now scientists intend to study the long-term effects health effects of specific sweeteners used in the beverage industry. In particular, experts are interested in the most popular aspartame and Acesulfame potassium. Scientists are also worried about the fact that the is actively campaigning for people to switch from the substitutes due to the fact that it is healthier. But a new study this is not so. And this must have something to do.
