A Large group of scientists from several institutions in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States was transplanted into the hearts of pigs, baboons, and sustained life over a long period of time. In his article, published in the journal Nature, scientists described the changes they made in the procedure of heart transplant and how well they worked.

As the population in developed countries is gradually aging, health services are faced with a growing number of health problems, among which not last place is the heart damage due to cardiovascular diseases.

Currently, the only treatment for these patients is transplantation. But every year — or even vitally dependent on a new heart — more and more people. Many die waiting for a donor. Perhaps porcine hearts transplanted into baboons will take root and one day will be able to save people's lives.

Help pigs to baboons

Previous studies have shown that there are two main reasons why the hearts of pigs do not survive in baboons: damages that occur during the procedure, and differences in size.

Scientists have found that the usual procedure of saving of the heart after removal from the animal prior to transplantation meant dip it in cold water. However, this method damages the heart tissue. To prevent damage, the researchers periodically added a solution of blood mixed with nutrients and hormones, and extra oxygen. This will keep the heart.

The scientists Also gave the baboons a medicine that stops the growth of the heart, and increased blood pressure to the level of swine. By combining a variety of techniques, scientists have discovered that could extend the life of the baboons. Two of them lived for three months throughout the study and two lived for six months before they were put to sleep.
