Thanks to committed scientists and discoveries developed on their basis in medical technology today, deaf people have the opportunity to hear, and the blind to see. For compensation of hearing loss for many years used a cochlear implant, but for vision to return applies . It seems that scientists are not concerned about people who have lost the sense of smell, but this is not true — scientists from Harvard University are one step closer to the creation of an electrical implant for the nose.

Hearing AIDS enable people to hear sounds by means of electric stimulation of certain groups of nerves. In particular, we are talking about the activation of the auditory analyzer, which subsequently transmits information about sound to the brain. In the same way scientists want to give patients the ability to smell, however, the nasal implant will affect other nerves.

To test the possibility of creating such a device, the researchers recruited a group of people aged 43 to 72 years. The main selection criterion was a high degree of sensitivity to smells. Its suitability candidates proved passing a test where they had to identify 40 different smells.

In the nasal cavity of the subjects was placed on the electrodes. They were used to stimulate nerves olfactory bulb, which is located in the intracranial cavity, just below the frontal lobes. Electric impact allowed subjects to feel the odors of onions and vegetables, though with them they were not.

According to Professor Eric Holbrook, participating in the development of technology, nowadays, scientists can be of little help to patients with loss of smell. However, the experiment proved the effectiveness of the invented method.

To create a nasal implant, scientists need to come up with a device that is able to recognize the molecules of the smell of others products and items. They hope that someday he will be able to stimulate the nerve endings so that to convey to people the odors.

What do you think how many years medicine will be able to make people healthy? Their assumptions to share in the comments or at .
