Why do people see the same thing in the last moments of their lives?

This may seem surprising, but almost all near-death experiences are similar

How many people do you think have come into contact with death and can talk about their experiences? It turns out that those who have come close to her for a short time are coming back with terribly similar stories. To find out why a group of scientists plunged into a eerie and mysterious world, presumably existing on the other side of life: according to the results, of the 1,034 subjects from Norway, Denmark and Germany, only 10% reported having a near-death experience. These experiences, as the authors of the scientific paper write, have several strange similarities - including dark tunnels with bright light, spiritual experiences and conversations with the dead. The results of the study were first presented at a meeting of the European Academy of Neurology in June 2019.

The Last Moments of Life

In the paper, published, the team assessed near-death experiences on Grayson's near-death experiences scale of one to 10. This helped the researchers to separate "true" near-death experiences from other touching psychological moments. The results of the survey among the subjects showed that 1 person out of 10 reported the presence of near-death experience. It is noteworthy that people who reported "true" near-death experiences found them pleasant, even if they were extremely intense and tense.

Man, 46: I was faced with a truly off-body experience when my vision and visual perception became incredibly abstract. For about an hour I felt neither myself nor the world around me.

Most of those who have experienced death (almost 90%) have experienced death. time was slowed or slowed down, while 65% said they felt extremely quick. More than half of respondents said they felt an off-body experience. The authors of the study note that the descriptions of the participants are particularly eloquent (and a little frightening).

A man, 28 years old: at that moment the whole life literally swept before my eyes. I felt that my soul was torn from the body - I was hovering and just... Was. Moments later, I felt like I was in a huge dark tunnel, at the end of which was the brightest white light I'd ever seen. I remember that my deceased relatives, including my maternal grandmother, were standing at the gate.

Tunnels, spiritual sensations and extra-body experiences are the most common signs of near-death experience

This study reveals a veil of mystery that most people will never encounter. However, the results do not explain why some people have near-death experiences, while others do not. One controversial idea is that during near-death experiences, our brains naturally produce N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Like near-death experiences, DMT's "breakthroughs" include a sense of separation from the body or a journey to alternate worlds. Scientists have done so before, but there is no direct evidence of a link between DMT and near-death experiences.

Meanwhile, the team behind the 2019 study offered a different explanation: Among the subjects who reported near-death experiences, there was also a rapid-sleep phase of THE REM (rapid eyes movement). In general, subjects with REM were 2.8 times more likely to report near-death experiences.

As he writes in his article, dreams are a kind of emotional tool that allows us to control and resolve emotional conflicts. However, critics note that most dreams lack strong emotional content, and meaningless dreams without any emotion are common.

Researchers believe that the disruption of the rapid sleep phase is associated with near-death experiences

Woman, 57 years old: I was very young when I almost drowned. I saw angels and they sang the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

REM is a period of sleep cycle marked by vivid and intense dreams, during which the body is paralyzed. In people with a fast sleep phase, these powerful experiences can occur while awake and lead to hallucinations or temporary paralysis. The authors of the study concluded that the link between REM-phase disturbance and near-death experiences deserves attention and further study. And what do you think about it? Answer
