Mysterious radio signal has puzzled astronomers. Perhaps a new type of Solar system

the radio Telescope Meerkat

For about two months, scientists were observing a part of the sky near the constellation using a radio telescope located in the Karoo desert in South Africa. Recently they noticed something strange — a variable radio source, whose position coincides with the position of the star TYC 8332-2529-1. The researchers continued observations with other telescopes and found that the unusual radioelement coming from a binary star system — two stars rotating around each other — in our own galaxy. However, this discovery turned out to be very difficult to explain.

This is the first discovery MeerKAT so-called "temporary source" — the object that is undergoing significant changes in brightness, or appears and disappears. Scientists do not exclude that this discovery — just the tip of the iceberg with respect to the natural phenomena that occur in the Universe. The paper was published in the journal .

The Work started with mapping the source position of the star TYC 8332-2529-1, which is located at a distance of about 1800 light years from Earth. Because it is a relatively bright star, a number of optical telescopes have discovered coming from her visible light. These data helped the researchers to understand that TYC 8332-2529-1 about two and a half times the mass of the Sun. Moreover, its brightness changes within 21 days.

the double looks like this

Further observation showed that has a magnetic field and rotates around the stars of the satellite every 21 days. However, the researchers believe that the companion star TYC 8332-2529-1 much smaller — its mass is probably 1.5 times the mass of the Sun. While scientists cannot say with certainty what kind of star. Usually, in binary systems there are White dwarfs, but most of them have less mass than the companion TYC 8332-2529-1.

What caused radiospire?

Itself can be caused by magnetic activity of the giant star, similar to solar flares, but much brighter and more energetic. However, such outbreaks are typically observed in dwarf stars, not the stars of the giants. The known solar system, including giant star and a star similar to the Sun may clarify the results obtained — in this case, the cause of the outbreak could be magnetic activity of the giant star. However, the signs that the satellite TYC 8332-2529-1 is actually a star like the Sun, was not detected.

MeerKat looks at the sky in search of a new, mysterious objects

Researchers believe that since the properties of stellar systems do not fit into our knowledge, open scientists "may present an entirely new kind of stellar systems". It is possible that this may be some exotic system, which we've seen before: a giant star with radio emission that rotates around a neutron star (the dense remnant of a supernova explosion) or a black hole. Scientists will continue observing with the radio telescope every week for the next four years, and optical telescope ASAS-SN will continue to monitor TYC 8332-2529-1. This means that researchers will be able to study in detail the nature of the source and its flash. Well, we just need to wait for new, unusual discoveries.
