Everyone living on our planet have one thing in common — the presence of fingers on the hands and feet. But these parts of the body necessary for grasping objects and hold the balance, has emerged in animals gradually, in the course of millions of years of evolution. Since originally life began in the water and then crawled onto land, it was logical to assume that the first similarity of the fingers originated in fish. But scientists could not prove it because they couldn't find the remains of any fish with body parts that somehow resembled fingers. But recently, the theory of the origin of the fingers in fish has been proven. In Canada was found a complete skeleton fish elpistostege (Elpistostege watsoni), which used the fingers to get out on the land.
According to scientific publications , the first remains of the so-called elpistostege were found in the 1980-ies. But then the scientists found only the skull of predatory fish, and the complete skeleton has emerged only decades later. Another ten years was spent on the study of bones. Overall, predatory fish were like who lived about 380 million years ago Tiktaalik (Tiktaalik roseae), but inside its fins, scientists have discovered a kind of full arm bone with your fingers.
According to paleontologists who study fossilized fossil animals and plants, toes helped ancient fish crawl in shallow water and lift the body. In fact, tiktaalik and elpistostege were transitional species between fish and amphibians amphibians, also known as amphibians. With time hands and fingers out of the fins out and after 20-30 million years after the fishes to the surface of the earth, on our planet there were these amphibious animals.
Unfortunately, at the moment, scientists can not exactly explain exactly how the fish had hands and fingers. It just happened at the end of the Devonian period, more than three hundred million years ago, but paleontologists rarely find fossils of animals that time. Why the remains were not preserved, scientists still unknown, but there are a few suggestions. First, the animals of the time could be sharply reduced in size, which complicates the search for their remains. Secondly, hundreds of millions of years ago the Earth could have been unfavorable conditions due to which ancient animals were unable . Thirdly, there is a possibility that paleontologists looking for the remains in the wrong places.
Fossilized skeleton of elpistostege (Elpistostege watsoni)
Currently, scientists have managed to find the remains of only some animals of the late Devonian period. These include the aforementioned fish tiktaalik and elpistostege and primitive amphibians pederpes, watcharee and acanthostega. The remains of ancient fish have been found in Northern Canada, so maybe the scientists should keep looking in this region. But fossils of amphibious creatures pederpes and acanthostega in the XX century were found on the territory of modern Greenland and Scotland. So, conducting research in these regions, scientists can discover more secrets of the mysterious times of our planet.
some look so acanthostega, which can also be considered an intermediate species between fish and amphibians
Finally I want to mention that in the course of evolution, animals not only received a new body part, but lost them. In modern animals and humans have many organs that still occupy their rightful places in the body, but do not perform any useful function. They are called rudiments and we recently that you recommend to read to everyone.
Inside the fins of a fish elpistostege (Elpistostege watsoni) were real fingers.
