Can't sing? To blame the brain

For many years, neuroscientists have investigated the musical abilities of people studying how and why we make music, the relationship between song and language, and other mysteries of musical knowledge. The Subjects were asked to reproduce synthesized with a computer vocal pitch. Scientists picked notes with a simple device in which a button changes the pitch of the sound, like a finger sliding up and down a guitar string. Both groups ultimately were able to hear the right notes. While professional musicians were faster, all participants were able to accurately reproduce the notes. But when they were asked to use for playback of your own voice, those who can't sing only succeeded in 59 percent of cases. But why?

The Researchers suspect that the core of the problem lies with the error correction mechanism — the brain's ability to compare its activity with the activities of other people and adjust brain activity. Even when the subjects lost the same note more than 20 times, not professionals who make a mistake the first time, was not able to reproduce the pitch. Characteristically, they often sang the same wrong note again and again. This suggests that the brain is persistently repeating the mistake, even when we identify notes by ear. Our brain has the ability to signal the voice to produce the correct note, but outlined «incorrect output» to match the perceived note.
