Artificial intelligence has learned to look for the robbers to patterns of behavior Source:

Finding commonalities between crimes committed in different districts of large cities, the police quickly find and arrest the criminals. According to Digital Trends, to recognize the "handwriting" of the robbers, investigators had to manually compare multiple protocols that took a lot of time and effort. It turned out that for this task the police Department of new York for three years, uses artificial intelligence to cope with it much faster.

The Software is called Patternizr, and its founders are an assistant Commissioner of the Department of the new York police Department Evan Levine and his colleague Alex Oohlas-wood. Development took about two years, and for training we used the data collected over one decade. To identify the similarities of the robberies, the algorithm pays attention to a method of breaking doors, the list of stolen things and a scene.

Algorithm started to be applied in 2016, but it became known about it only now from an article in the Informs Journal, in which authors discussed their work. Its efficiency has been proven many times — for example, he was able to link two robberies that were committed in two different parts of new York with a difference in two weeks. The offender was given his unusual weapon — a syringe, which he intimidated the store Home Depot.

Manual method of matching would have taken more time and not the fact that the officers would be able to find a match. In the worst case, the burglar still would have remained at large. Thanks Patternizr, instead of hours of labor, the investigators were required to make just one click.

It is Noteworthy that artificial intelligence has helped the police in more complex and responsible task — the decision when making a sentence. About what can be a dangerous artificial intelligence in a court case, you can read in our .
