Weld of glass and metal? Now it's possible

Thanks to new technologies it is possible to do what previously seemed impossible. For example, early humans could not use welding to join two different materials such as metal and glass. The problem was due to different melting temperature and degree of expansion in response to heating. Researchers from the University of Heriot-watt in Scotland have figured out how to solve this problem — they intend to create a welding device that combines materials using ultrafast laser pulses. The effectiveness of this method has already been proved.

Still, to combine glass and different metals, people had to use glue. This method is extremely inaccurate — the substance can easily flow out of the edges joined and keep the materials so weak that over time they begin to subside. You should also consider the composition of sticky substances and chemical compounds can reduce the service life of the final product.

A New method of welding involves the attachment of materials with short laser pulses with picosecond duration — compared to the second, it's like a second compared to 30 000 years. The process occurs at the closest contact of the two materials — on the border of two materials with an area of only a few microns are created tiny spots that provide a solid grip.

The reliability of the adhesion was tested at a temperature of from -50 to +90 degrees Celsius. To the surprise of researchers, the welds remained intact, which suggests that it the time to start developing a new generation of welding machines. Technology will find application in the construction of spacecraft, optics and even medicine.
