Scientists have discovered a new species of a black hole

According to the study published in the journal , scientists may have found the smallest black hole ever discovered. This was possible thanks to a new technique, which combines several sets of data. Researchers believe that the black hole is about 3.3 times more massive than the Sun and is in a binary system J05215658, which is located at a distance of about 10,000 light years from the outer edge of the disk of the milky way. Although to confirm low-mass black hole more research is required, there is a probability that this object is part of a mysterious class of small . These objects were not discovered in the past, as no one knew exactly how to look for them.

Can there be small black holes?

Most of the observed black holes about 5-15 times more massive than the Sun, but this does not mean that all black holes in the Universe this size. Scientists wanted to find out whether there is anything in common between the most massive known neutron stars (whose mass is about 2.1 times the mass of the Sun) and the least massive , weighing not more than five solar masses.
