In the night from 16 to 17 July, the inhabitants of the greater part of the territory of Russia will be able to see the so-called private lunar Eclipse. The satellite of our planet during its motion along the orbit will plunge into the southern part of the earth's shadow. This will be the last for the next six years the lunar Eclipse with a significant dimming of the moon which can be observed from Eastern Europe.

What is a lunar Eclipse?

A lunar Eclipse is when the Moon hides in the shadow of the Earth and we can't see her completely (full lunar Eclipse) or partially (private). In the course of this phenomenon is on the line between the Moon and the Sun. In Eclipse, the satellite is painted a characteristic red tint. The reason is that reflected from the moon, the sun's rays are tangential to earth's surface, scattered in the atmosphere of our planet and is partly reflected back to the surface of the moon. The earth's atmosphere is most transparent for the rays of red-orange part of the light spectrum that reflects the moon's surface.

When to watch the lunar Eclipse?

As noted on the website of the Moscow planetarium, the length of the shadow of the Eclipse in the night from 16 to 17 July will be 1 hour and 58 minutes.

The Main part of the Eclipse can be viewed, starting with 23:00 Moscow time. At that time already good will be seen darkening the left side of the satellite. The moon will begin immersion into the Earth's shadow.

0:31 GMT 17 Jul come maximum phase of the partial Eclipse. 65 percent of the lunar disk will be in the shadow of our planet. At this point, the redness of the moon will be at its maximum. The Eclipse will conclude at 2:00 MSK when the satellite is completely out of earth's shadow.

Where to watch the lunar Eclipse?

According to the Moscow planetarium, some phases of the partial Eclipse of the moon will be visible: in most parts of Europe, much of Asia, Australia, Africa, South-Eastern United States, South America, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian ocean and Antarctica.

It can be observed practically in all territory of Russia, except for Northern and remote Eastern areas.

"Best observation conditions will be in the Crimea and the Northern Caucasus, where the height of the moon above the horizon will reach 20°, and the summer weather conditions are likely to favour observations" — is told in the message.

"it would Be clearly visible in the European part of Russia (except its North), where the Eclipse will occur near local midnight. The initial phase of the Eclipse will also be visible in South-Western Siberia early in the morning on the moon. In most visible areas on the territory of our country, the Moon will be low above the southern horizon," — noted on the website of the Moscow planetarium.

Assuming cloudless weather lunar Eclipse will see the inhabitants of Moscow. In the Planetarium noted that the Eclipse will be visible to the naked eye, but astronomers suggest watching it through binoculars or a small telescope. Close to plunging into the moon's shadow can be seen of Saturn, and to the right (West) you will see Jupiter.

When will the next Eclipse?

According to the RIA Novosti news Agency referring to head of the Observatory of St. Petersburg planetarium Maria Smirnova, the next lunar Eclipse with substantial shading of the satellite will take place only after 6 years – 7 September 2025. At this time, the people of Russia will be able to see a total lunar Eclipse. A satellite of the planet will completely turn red.

By the Way, not so long ago there was a total solar Eclipse. Someone missed rather see .
