If we become super-strong mentally? Source:

When people are given the opportunity to see what's going on inside their heads in real time, they quickly learn to suppress pain, self-control and improving mental abilities. If most of us had access to such technology, the world would be transformed. Many of us have developed special ways of coping with feelings and emotions. For example, when we feel stress, we can calm down, if you start to breathe correctly. If we have a throbbing toothache, we try to alleviate it with the help of meditative techniques. And when we feel empty, we can cheer ourselves by imagining that we are somewhere in the "happy place". Those who have tried similar strategies, know that they often work, but with varying degrees of success.

Now imagine if you could see what happens inside your brain when you experience such emotions and feelings, such as pain, anxiety, depression, fear, and fun — all in real time. Suddenly, your senses cease to be a mystery, and the effectiveness of little mental tricks that you use in everyday life becomes apparent.

This Is the idea of the new technique, known as "real-time fMRI". Getting specific visual feedback of brain activity while performing mental tricks and strategies we can learn to consciously control your emotions, feelings and desires, as if by the touch of a button. With practice you can learn to control your own mind in the same way as the weight lifter controls a specific muscle group. Obviously, all this raises the tantalizing prospect of a future in which we can train the advanced mental abilities beyond ours today.

The First demonstration that fMRI in real time can be a powerful tool, held in 2005, along with a study in which scientists taught people to control the pain. Eight people were lying in the scanner, experiencing painful burning sensation on the skin. The scientists showed them a virtual flame that represents the activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, a brain area involved in processing pain. Through various cognitive strategies such as "trying to leave or come to a painful stimulus and attempt to feel the stimulus of high or low intensity", the scientists quickly learned to control the flame size, however, changing the level of electrical activity in region responsible for pain.

It is Important to note that the decrease or increase of the nerve signal is correlated with the subjective sensations of pain, measured with a questionnaire and a 10-point scale of pain. Surprisingly, for a single 13-minute session, participants learn easy to control the size of the flames and were able to reduce their pain by more than 50%.

Since then, studies using fMRI real-time went up and a new clinical and experimental applications appear almost every month. How to display brain activity now include feedback, such as audible signals or "thermometer display" built into virtual reality goggles.

A study by the 2017, published in the journal Appetite, showed that training can help in the fight against obesity. During the four-day period, learning men with overweight have learned to expand the interaction between areas of the brain involved in the performance and rewards, improving self-control and learning to make choices in favor of healthy food.

Another study published this year showed that learning control over the right prefrontal cortex, a brain area that is disturbed in people with ADHD, reduced symptoms of ADHD and improve attention. These improvements remained after 11 months after the test, showing that training can cause long-term changes in the brain.

2016 Study showed that older people who use this technique will also improve your cognitive function. It may well be that the young person could improve brain function in this way. Study 2015 conducted among healthy adults showed that learning with the help of neurofeedback can improve focus and reduce distraction.

Other recent studies have shown that training can be used to treat PTSD from war veterans, depression, anxiety, and even cigarette addiction. Another study of James Sulzer from the University of Texas at Austin and his colleagues have shown that participants can learn to regulate levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine that can be used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

The Study clearly showed that this technology can be used in countless ways, but how effective is it in the long run and if practical, remains to be seen. Because fMRI real-time require expensive equipment, immediate use must be intended to treat serious conditions, when the powerless are more affordable methods of treatment. However, as with any new technology, fMRI scanners will eventually become cheaper, more compact and more affordable.

And this opens up a whole new world of possibilities. To get an idea about the untapped potential, imagine what would happen if an athlete or a bodybuilder worked, not being able to see my body or the numbers on the scale. It would be incredibly difficult to determine what exercises work and which are not, and to what extent. Effective to master almost any skill requires visual feedback, and the same can be said about training the brain.

What would be the ultimate potential of learning using fMRI real-time, if you had easy access to her and you could be weekly or even daily to learn to control your brain? If several 10-minute sessions give statistically significant results that can do 10 000 hours of practice? There is a true way to test, but "mental powers" can be achievable.

Learning neurofeedback could provide the shortest path to abilities, which, for example, show the monks that can completely block the excruciating pain and change physiology to dry a towel on the back in a cold room.

So, although the ultimate potential of this technology remains to be seen reasonably to believe that the amazing mental abilities experienced meditators who require years for their development, it will be possible one day to obtain in a short period of time.
