Every year, doctors around the world tirelessly working to create drugs that would help in the treatment is not treatable today, the disease. One of these is Parkinson's disease, to therapy which scientists from Karolinska Institute (Karolinska Institute) recently proposed to use a special virus that could penetrate the brain of the patient and "reprogram" it to fight the disease.
As you know, Parkinson's disease develops due to the fact that brain cells called astrocytes, stop making such connection as dopamine. "Reprogramming" is that a useful virus penetrating the cells of the human brain, forcing them to re-produce useful dopamine.
The Research team, headed by Dr. Ernest Arenas, clinical trials have injected into the brain of experimental mice, the dopamine neurons which have been destroyed, a special virus, which carried a four-gene. These genes are responsible for production of the hormone. 5 weeks after the "infection", the experts noted that the mice became more active, their gait improved and movement became clearer. In the control group, which received no treatment, changes were not observed.
The astrocytes "infected" mice have become, in essence, in dopamine neurons, but only at the injection site. Nearby structures remained unchanged. But that's not all. Under the same experiment astrocytes man, but "in vitro" was successfully modified in a similar manner, indicating a fairly high success rate of the experiment. At the moment scientists are preparing for the next phases of clinical trials.
