No corneal our organ of vision can not exist

We have previously reported to you (if you are interested in this news, you can subscribe to our ). However, testing new technologies on humans are not so often. While scientists are developing new methods of stem cells application. And one of those not only recently successfully completed the first human trials, but can enter into medical practice in the not very distant future. We are talking about the first ever transplant of an artificial cornea is created from stem cells.

Why the cornea is so important?

Cornea (or iris) is essential to the way we perceive the surrounding world. This . Speaking in simple terms, the cornea is essentially the lens. If the analogy with a camera, the cornea is — is the camera lens. The cornea collects and focuses in the right direction of the light rays, which are already taken by other parts of the visual analyzer. That is why «failure» cornea carries the risk of vision loss.

How stem cells can help restore vision

According to the journal Nature, in her presentation for ophthalmic conference in late August, ophthalmologist koji Nishida of Osaka University (Japan) said that one of his patients (name not disclosed) became the first person in the world who restored the cornea using reprogrammed stem cells. Dr. Nishida also said that his patient suffered from a disease in which cells of the cornea lose transparency and dying. This is first «blur» paths and objects, and then complete loss of vision. Usually, treatment of such conditions using donor cornea taken from a recently dead people. But in this case, the doctors decided to do otherwise.

In order to heal the woman, Nishida and his team used induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells). Cells by reprogramming skin cells are moving into an embryonic state from which they can then be transformed into other types of cells. Including the cells of the cornea. From iPS cells, scientists have grown new corneas, and transplanted to the patient. The operation itself was conducted in early August, but for rehabilitation it took 3 weeks, after which the woman returned vision. Now her eyesight is not in danger.

Stages of corneal transplantation

It is Worth noting that this is not the first Japanese doctors. Earlier they used to treat spinal cord injuries. Work is also underway in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. As for this case, after a successful operation, the Japanese Ministry of health allowed Mr Nishida to try out the procedure on four volunteers. The next operation is planned for the end of this year, and an established procedure which can be used for widespread treatment, according to the scientist, should appear in five years.
