Airbus conducted tests of an unmanned landing Source:

Development of unmanned aerial vehicles involves not only how well the UAV will stay in the air, but how safe are take-off and landing device. And recently aviakontserna Airbus tested the automatic landing system for one of the most advanced flying laboratories H225.

New technology is called Eagle (Eye for Autonomous Guidance and Landing Extension — the imaging equipment Autonomous control and landing). It is designed to combine all the functions of the image processing and analysis of data on the surrounding objects, informing the crew and ground flight control center about the situation at landing. Eagle was successfully tested on the multipurpose helicopter model H225 under the control of the pilot. The result showed that the autopilot device is able to recognize the ground object the size of a watermelon from a height of 3,2 km. In addition, the system is able to track the movement of objects relative to reference points and to adjust the course in accordance with it.

The Eagle System is designed in such a way that it can be used as a helper function, and integrate it to any system of Autonomous control of aircraft. In the future, Airbus proposes to conduct a series of tests to find out how to behave in autopilot without control from the person.

Eagle is expected to be used for aircraft involved in search and rescue operations in areas of emergency situations and for private air transportation. In addition, it can facilitate the work of the pilots of helicopters in urban environments.
