Electric eel has inspired scientists to create a biological energy source Source:

For several decades scientists are looking for a way to create the most safe and biologically friendly way to supply energy to electrical devices implanted in the human body. Think to yourself: well, who wants to put in your body of toxic batteries, and then another, and periodically change them through surgery? In nature there is a striking example of an animal that is able to generate electricity with his body is an electric eel. He inspired a team of researchers from several American universities on the creation of a fundamentally new source of electricity.

Acne is able to generate electricity through a series of thin cells that permeate all of its oblong body. Cells resemble biological electrodes, which in different the ends are the ions of sodium and potassium. The total tension in the body the eel can reach 1300 volts, and the current strength is 1 ampere. One powerful jolt of electricity is quite able to kill a large animal, or perhaps to stun a horse. Acne use this natural mechanism to protect themselves from other predators and to hunt. In terms of generation of electricity with acne, you can bet on is that the rays.

Previously, Chinese scientists had already attempted to copy the generator of electric eels and implement the same new batteries. In the beginning of the year we even talk about developments in this area. But in the case of the Chinese project, it was about the food of different wearable electronics or smart clothes. In the case of researchers from the universities of Fribourg, Michigan and San Diego, they're going to use unusual batteries in medical implants.

In my design they used a 3D printer, hydrogel, plastic sheets and a special membrane that separates the multiple cells together. As the main mechanism chosen was the difference in the salt concentration in marine and fresh water. This has resulted in reverse electrodialysis and as a result, the production of electricity without the need to recharge the battery. His invention of scientists called "artificial electric organ". It should be noted that part of the body of acne responsible for the production of electricity, is called exactly the same.
