Google was unable to confirm the existence of cold fusion

Spending years on research and experiments and invested a considerable amount of money in this enterprise the company has not any proof that nuclear fusion can be carried out at room temperature. However, investments in the amount of $ 10 million were not in vain, writes portal Futurism. About his research and the results the company reports in an article this week in the journal Nature.

When merging two atomic nuclei is released huge amounts of energy — it is the process that powers the Sun and other stars (thermonuclear reaction). If we learn to reproduce it in terrestrial terms, you will get an inexhaustible source of clean energy. Work in this direction is underway .

the

is it Possible cold fusion?

Cold fusion, also called low energy nuclear reactions is a hypothetical type of nuclear reactions at temperatures close to room, and unlike "hot" fusion, which takes place in the interiors of stars and during the explosion of a thermonuclear bomb at high pressures and temperatures in millions of degrees Kelvin. Until now, assumptions about the possibility of running cold fusion could not find their confirmation, despite earlier claims by some scientists, which ultimately was rejected by science.

For Example, in March 1989, two American chemists, Stanley Pons and Martin fleishmann, said that they noticed signs of nuclear fusion in the experiment palladiumii plates, placed in water saturated with deuterium (heavy hydrogen isotope), which allowed current. In 1991, the American physics Khan Ukhm and William Lee said that generated anomalous levels of tritium, another heavy hydrogen isotope — bombardment of palladium pulses of the hot deuterium ions. It was also suggested that emergence in an environment with high hydrogen excess heat during the heating of metal powders.

In 2015, cold fusion became interested in digging Google. She hired 30 scientists, gave them 10 million dollars and put in front of them to test all three assumptions, after making his own experiments with the use of modern technology. The result of the project were about a dozen of publications and a recent Google article in the journal Nature. The conclusion was disappointing: evidence that cold fusion is possible, not found.

The article notes that in one case when loading palladium with deuterium plates at high concentrations of the atoms of the samples were unstable. In the second in the bombardment of palladium in the analysis of nuclear signatures showed no tritium. Finally, in the third case, 420 repetitions of heating the metal powder excessive heat was not recorded.

At the same time, the researchers explain that the experiments with palladium require further study. Subsequent work can give stable samples with high concentrations of deuterium and intended effects of the bombardment can be too small to be measured with modern equipment.

Despite the failure in the experiments, as noted by Nature, investments by Google were not in vain.

"this Project allowed us to create tools and materials that work well in extreme conditions. They will benefit in other areas of energy", — the paper reported Nature.
