Why do people with confidence are robots who commit mistakes? Source:

You may have already seen the "SFII", where the robot tries to put a portable object on the table and finally falls, as if from weakness. If not, she is waiting for you below. The image was created on the basis of a video that recently the company Boston Dynamics showed at the next event TED talk, where she explained and demonstrated their latest achievements in the field of robotics. There were already known robot dog Spot, and bipedally Atlas robot, which became the hero of the video.

Despite the fact that the company has called "a harbinger of robopocalypse" (she really develops some of the most advanced robotics in the world), the reaction to the latest video and in particular GIF-an image of the people was much softer. And not sympathized with the poor iron.

"I felt very sorry for the robot. We will have a very strange future," — shares his thoughts commenter on the website Reddit, where she first appeared is a GIF image.

"That was the funny behavior of the robot, among all the videos that I saw. Poor guy. He tried so hard", — said another person in the discussion thread.

But why do people become "more friendly" not only to Boston Dynamics robots, but all robots when the latter make mistakes, sometimes very rude, like the one you can see in the image above? According to the group of scientists from the Center for human-computer interaction Salzburg (Austria), this can be explained the same why we like when other people make mistakes. The fact is that, regardless of possible differences in social status, that puts them closer to us, making them more accessible. In other words, the error cause the robots to look "humane", because none of us is immune from mistakes.

A Group of researchers from Salzburg under the direction of Nicole Mirnig recently tested this hypothesis in the experiment, with the involvement of 45 volunteers. Before them was tasked to build something out of LEGO with a small humanoid robot. Mirnig, and her colleagues, conducting some tests specifically programmed a bot in order to do a simple small errors such as repeated words or couldn't grasp the part of the designer. After each session the designer collection, the researchers asked volunteers to rate the robot on a number of criteria, including attractiveness, an anthropomorphic (humanoid) and intelligence. The results showed that when the robot made mistakes, people liked him more.

It is Difficult to say definitely why making mistakes robots are for more people "own", but, as suggested, Mirnig, all due to the so-called "effect of failure", which, according to social psychology, occurs when one is more credible or becomes more attractive when making mistakes. However it is also noted that the effect is very contextual dependent. That is, we don't like people that constantly make mistakes, but we like when someone makes minor mistakes from time to time. And the robots just fall into this latter category.

In the experiment in Salzburg volunteers are asked build something from LEGO with the help of a robot. The whole process was recorded, and then the scientists analyzed the reactions

"Research has shown that people with their points of view and expectations towards robots mainly rely on what they learned about robots from media" — said Mirnig in an interview with Digital Trends.

"these media sources can be recorded and films in which robots are often presented in the form of a perfectly functioning entity, whether evil or good. To his personal interaction with the robot, people tend to revert to the experience of observation to those memories and expectations. Based on this, I suggest that the interaction with the robot, making mistakes makes us feel that we are less inferior to modern technology and are more likely to become closer with them, with the same robots".

Most Likely, it is the psychological aspect will continue. And if these findings are confirmed in the future, the company engaged in the manufacture of robots, you can program them to commit minor mistakes when interacting with us. Of course, this all will be very carefully calculated so the errors were not serious enough to affect the experience through this interaction. In General, machines will sooner or later really can become more humane, though this humanity will be artificial. But as it turns out, our subconscious can be fooled. And that someone will be able to use.
