Who lives in a huge dead zone in the middle of the Pacific ocean? Source:

There are on our planet, places that at first glance seem almost lifeless. It's places like permafrost, Antarctica or deserts. However, in these areas literally «boiling» life. But there is another similar area on the planet — a giant dead zone, located in the Pacific ocean. Very long was considered that this part of the world ocean is almost not inhabited, however it is not so.

What is a dead zone in the Pacific

These remarkable waters are in the heart of the South Pacific circle, the center of which there is a so-called oceanic pole of inaccessibility. There is also the Point Nemo. This is the point having the largest distance from any land. Point Nemo also known as as Zagorodnaya ships here, the risk of damage to nature or people is minimal.

Despite the fact that the oceanic pole of inaccessibility known to people for quite a long time, studying its fauna scientists were extremely small. And for a long time this place was something like «sea desert».

Who lives in a huge dead zone

Not so long ago a group of German researchers from the Institute of marine Microbiology max Planck on Board FS Sonne made a trip through this area with the purpose of knowing who inhabits the mysterious waters. In total, the scientists were 4,350 nautical miles (7,000 kilometers).

«To our surprise, we found a large number of bacteria in the surface waters of the South Pacific ocean. Thus, they are much less when compared with other parts of the Atlantic», — says one of the researchers, microbiologist Bernhard Fuchs. «this is Probably the lowest number of micro-organisms ever recorded in the surface waters of the ocean.»

Among microbes, discovered team dominated the top 20 species. One of the identified populations, which have attracted the most attention of the researchers — is the AEGEAN-169. First, it was the most numerous, and secondly, these bacteria are found in surface waters. In this previous study allowed us to find them only at a depth of 500 meters.

«This indicates an interesting feature of the bacteria to adapt. Micro-organisms which formerly lived at great depths, can now dwell in surface waters, adapting to temperature and UV exposure.» — said one of the team members, a microbiologist Greta Reintjes.

the trial also confirmed that the oceanic pole of inaccessibility is a unique habitat where the organisms can adapt to extreme physical and chemical conditions. The remoteness and relative inaccessibility for making these waters some of the cleanest in the world, and therefore changes in the types they can capture in the most natural conditions without the influence of our civilization.
