MRI-vest will better detect breast cancer Source:

An x-ray and MRI can effectively identify breast cancer even in its early stages, but because of the prevalence of the disease, scientists are constantly trying to develop faster and more available alternative. Magnetic resonance imaging is considered the most preferred method of diagnosis due to the lack of harmful radiation, but the scanning process is quite long and is more expensive than x-rays. She also has another big disadvantage, and a team of scientists from Vienna have come up with how to get rid of it.

The Researchers explained that current at the date of MRI scan of the breast shows different efficiency depending on the body shape of patients. To equalize the diagnostic accuracy, the researchers decided to abandon the vertical scanners with two disposable cups with RF coils. Instead, they proposed the use of a special vest which is suitable for all women.

It's made of fabric to which is sewn a radio frequency coil 32. The vest is equipped with motion sensors that help to reduce noise when breathing patients and thus improve the clarity of the pictures. If an ordinary MRI scan breast women stood on their feet, when using the vest they lie on their backs.

An Important feature of the project is that in lying position the chest is flattened, which means that the receiver closer much most of it. Thus, the signal becomes stronger and the scanning time can be significantly reduced.

Elmar, Lister, researcher

At the moment the vest is still under development. Previously, researchers have published reports about successful tests, but they do not yet consider it ready to use device.
