Astronomers have recorded the second repetitive quick burst that . This discovery suggests that the space may be a lot more of these mysterious signals. This surge, which was named FRB 180814.J0422+73, is among the 13 newly discovered fast radio bursts (or FRB) is a short and powerful signals radioenergy coming from distant galaxies. Within a few weeks, the radio bursts observed last year on the CHIME experiment in British Columbia.
The Results of recent work have been disclosed at the meeting of the American astronomical society on January 7 and published on January 9 in Nature.
theMost of these bursts appear once, lasts a few milliseconds and never again. Therefore, astronomers have puzzled over their source.
"If something flashing in the sky for millisecond and nothing more happens for many years to study this very hard," says astronomer Shreeharsh Tendulkar from McGill University in Montreal, team member of CHIME.
But then in 2016, astronomers have discovered the first repetition of the FRB and realized that they all originated from the same source FRB 121102. Astronomers traced the signal to their native galaxy and determined that it came from an extremely magnetic environments, like the area surrounding a black hole. Scientists did not know whether the repetitive signal FRB 121102 is unique. Over 60 discovered FRB none have been repeated — until now. The second finding, scientists are now looking for the other.
"Imagine that you saw a unicorn," says Tendulkar. "And suddenly find another. You know that they have a whole population. There is hope to find a lot more".
The CHIME Team have found the first duplicate signal FRB on August 14 and another four in the next two months, which came from the same place in the sky. And only during the third surge, 17 September, scientists realized that they had a recurrence.
"Someone said: look, these three burst have the same properties," he says. "Everyone was very excited."
The Calculations showed that the new repeater is 1.6 billion light years from us. Team CHIME also saw a strange similarity between two well-known recurring outbreaks. Most FRB — just a sharp horn, similar to one note played on the trumpet. But some consisted of separate podoplelov that varied in frequency, like "WA-WA-wah" sad trombone.
"We saw it in 121102 and can't explain," says astronomer Emily Petroff of ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for radio astronomy, was not involved in the new work. "Until now we had only one repeater and it left more questions than answers. But the fact that both the repeater behave the same way, may mean that they have the same origin".
Where there are fast radio bursts? Theories of astronomers very much. At some point they even considered the option signals from intelligent aliens. But it is unclear whether repeated bursts and single spikes from sources of one kind or repeated single, if you watch long enough.
"It's the wild, wild West," says Tendulkar. "We have enticing clues, but definitive conclusions difficult."
