History of computer mouse originates 9 December 1968, when it was presented at the exhibition of interactive devices in California. The patent for this gadget got Doug Engelbart 2 years later. The first computer, the set which included the mouse was a mini-computer Xerox 8010 Star Information System in 1981. The Xerox mouse had three buttons and cost $ 400, which is equivalent to the current $ 1,000. In 1983, Apple released its own single-button mouse for Lisa computer, the cost of which managed to reduce by 16 times. Widely known computer mouse acquired through the use of Macintosh computers. How does the modern computer mouse — this was in today's issue.
Modern mice come in two types — optical and laser. Regardless of the type of the mouse perceives his movement in the working plane (e.g. the surface area of the table) and sends this information to the computer. A program running on the computer in response to the movement of the mouse produces on-screen action, responsive to the direction and distance of the movement.
In today's optical mice use a so-called optical correlation. Using LEDs and system focusing his light lenses under the mouse illuminates the surface. Reflected from this surface light is collected by another lens and falls on a receiving sensor IC is the image processor. He, in turn, makes the images of the surface under the mouse with a high frequency (typically over 1 kHz) and processes them frame by frame comparing images. Based on the analysis of consecutive pictures that represent a square matrix of pixels of different brightness, an integrated processor calculates the result indicators, determining the direction of the mouse movement.
The Surface on which the mouse is moved, usually has irregularities. Oveseas bright led mounted at a slight angle to the surface irregularities cast shadows that are recorded by the sensor. Optical mice typically used red LEDs because of its cheapness. In addition, it is to red and more sensitive silicon photodetectors. The disadvantage of optical mice — is the increased power consumption compared to laser devices.
Laser mice for the surface illumination is not used on the led, and infrared laser diode, illuminating the surface. Because of the coherence (i.e. the coherence) of the laser radiation focused on the working surface, the latter is much more accurate. In addition, for the laser mouse requires a much smaller surface roughness than is required for optical mouse.
Laser mouse was first published in 1998, being manufactured by the company Sun Microsystems. However, it has not received wide distribution. Unlike the optical mouse the laser mouse able to work on mirrored and transparent surfaces such as glass, which is a significant advantage.
