Macrophages are blood cells whose main function is the destruction of infectious agents, elimination of dead skin cells and other measures «cleaning» of the body. Like any cells of the immune system, macrophages located throughout the body, but it is interesting that they were found in damaged areas of the myocardium. Previously it was assumed that macrophages only «clean» the place of the dead cardiomyocytes, but it was much more interesting. Scientists have suggested that macrophages can coordinate and transmit the electrical signals needed for contraction of the heart.

A Series of experiments on mice showed that a large number of cardiac macrophages are concentrated in the atrioventricular node and it is responsible for the generation of the electric pulse necessary to reduce.
