Scientists are faced with an unknown atmospheric phenomenon Source:

Meet "Steve" recently detected an unknown atmospheric phenomenon. It is so unusual, that still has no official scientific explanation. Here, incidentally, is apparently an unusual name. Thanks to the continuous work conducted over several months by a group of enthusiasts and professionals that studies atmospheric phenomena, it is now possible to get acquainted with "Steve". However, many questions still remain a mystery to scientists.

This amazing phenomenon first noticed by a group of enthusiasts from Facebook, watching and studying auroras (Aurora). Thanks to the power of the Internet and media, news quickly becomes overgrown with reviews and reports of other observers. The phenomenon is a slowly floating on the sky a bright purple-green ribbon of light. And in contrast to other known types of auroral scientists still do not know what is its source. The Alberta Aurora Chasers group, who discovered this phenomenon, I decided to call him "Steve" in honor of one of the heroes of children's cartoon "over the hedge", which is used to give the name of Steve every inexplicable from his point of view of the object.

Soon, the work of enthusiastic Amateurs, attracted the attention of scientists from NASA and ESA (European space Agency) and the University of calgary (Canada), which is now also trying to figure out what is behind this phenomenon really is. And here on the Western blogs is only just beginning to appear the first information. So, blog Aurorasaurus reports that the tape width is "Steve" that extends generally from East to West, is about 25-30 kilometers. Its length may be hundreds, and possibly thousands of kilometers. The phenomenon can last for hours or slightly more and, most likely, is seasonal. From October to February it was not observed. Main color gives off a purple hue, frequently accompanied by the green "feathers", which quickly disappear. Most often, the phenomenon is observed in the Northern part of Canada (near calgary, Alberta, Canada). Enthusiasts originally thought that the source of the phenomenon may be the increased activity of protons in the atmosphere, however, proton Aurora is invisible to the naked eye, so this option is immediately rejected.

Professor, Department of physics and astronomy, University of calgary, Eric Donovan also expressed interest in this unusual atmospheric phenomenon and decided to study data collected in the framework of the Swarm satellite mission of the European space Agency studying the Earth's magnetic field. The mission uses three satellites that conduct high-precision measurements of force, direction, and status changes of Earth's magnetic field, causing auroras. This amazing phenomenon is created in the collision of highly charged solar wind particles with particles of gas that make up the atmosphere of our planet, like oxygen and nitrogen.

More recently, satellites of the Swarm flew right over "Steve", and the data collected and research instruments showed very clear changes in the environment in the area of this phenomenon.

"the Temperature at an altitude of 300 kilometers above the Earth's surface has jumped up to 3000 degrees Celsius. Data showed that part of the plume "Steve" with a width of 25 kilometers on the West side was moving at this point with a speed of 6 kilometers per second, while the speed of his opposite side was 10 kilometers per second" — according to Donovan in a press release, ESA.

Doubts about such an incredible temperature changes, the portal Gizmodo decided to appeal directly to Donovan and asked to clarify whether on the ESA website contain the data to which he replied that indicators of increased temperature are correct. Journalists Gizmodo also asked Donovan unknown whether the cause of such temperature changes.

"my colleague BEA Gallardo-Lacourt working on one, but nothing concrete at the moment, I can not comment. However, we intend very soon to publish their ideas."

Donovan also said that very surprised, how often there is a "Steve". The phenomenon is likely to manifest in the past, but scientists are only now paying attention to it and decided that it clearly deserves its adoption as a separate atmospheric phenomenon. In addition, the researcher noted an unusual spectral set: combination of colors "Steve" is not like normal polar lights.

"I saw him a few months ago over calgary. It is, however, very bright. My colleague suggested that it may be the most visible type of lights, but least studied, as we just weren't paying attention to it".
