Why the US army began purchasing microwave gun? Source:

In our portal we have about weapons that use microwaves. As a rule, it was a different test samples and it seemed that before the introduction into service far. However, it became known that the army of the United States of America made a large order for the purchase of microwave weapons.

According to the publication The Verge, the main supplier of the US army will be the company Lockheed Martin, which will put the military air microwave system to combat drones. The system is designed for installation on aircraft (airplanes and helicopters) in order to disable the drones at a great distance a focused beam of microwave radiation. It is worth noting that a year ago the U.S. army has adopted a similar system SHIELD (High Energy Laser Demonstrator), but it is not widespread, despite the fact that it had spent $ 26 million. The sum of the current transaction were not disclosed.

But what of the army of the United States suddenly needed a microwave gun? The answer is quite simple: security reasons. The fact is that purchased guns will be used for the destruction of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. This decision is associated with the recent assassination attempt on the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Recall that on 4 August during a speech 2 drone (presumably Matrice 600 from DJI), with the C4 plastic explosives on Board flew to the scene, which was made by the President. The attempt was unsuccessful, but 7 people from the presidential guard were injured. So the decision to adopt tools to combat drones looks very reasonable.
