Developed batteries that can be bent Source:

Flexible devices require an equally flexible batteries. Otherwise, this technology does not make sense

Modern electronics manufacturers increasingly began to turn their attention to flexible displays. By the way, how do you feel about this kind of gadgets? Write your feedback in our In any case, devices with curved displays like the Galaxy Fold already if you wish, you can even buy. It is difficult to say whether this technology is the future of mobile development and not just technology, but any device in need of power sources. «Gold standard» in this case is that, as we know, quite unsuitable to the bend. But I think the solution was found because a team of researchers from Zurich have created batteries that can be repeatedly bent.

How to construct a flexible battery

According to Sciencedaily, the discovery belongs to scientists from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). Experts have developed a prototype that can bend, stretch and twist even without interrupting the flow of energy. What makes this new battery special is its electrolyte. Electrolyte — this is the part of the battery, through which lithium ions move when the battery is being charged or discharged.

To date, no one has used the highly flexible components when creating a lithium-ion battery», — says one of the lead authors of the work, the ETH Professor Markus Niederberger.

Here is a prototype of a flexible battery.

The Cathode and anode of the battery (negative and positive contacts) consist of a flexible polymer made with conductive carbon. It serves also as the outer shell. Inside battery lined with a layer of silver plates which overlap each other like shingles.

Due to the fact that these plates are located «overlap», the loss of contact between parts of the battery does not occur even if the design is stretched or twisted. Well, as the electrolyte, the scientists used a special gel. The experts also stressed that this gel is more environmentally friendly than commercial counterparts used in conventional batteries.

A New gel electrolyte contains water with high concentrations of lithium salts, which not only facilitates the flow of lithium ions between the cathode and the anode during charging or discharging of the battery, but keeps it from electrochemical decomposition. This makes the battery more resistant to overcharge and less toxic.

According to the researchers, to optimize the operation of the new flexible battery is necessary to conduct additional research before you consider a commercial application of the technology. After all, at this stage flexible — it's only a prototype. First of all, the team of experts is expected to increase the amount of electrode material that it can hold, which will affect the ultimate capacity.

After all these «the frogs» battery no problem continuing to work.

As long as it remains an open question as to what extent it is possible to increase the thickness of the battery and the number of internal compartments to store charge without losing power and flexibility. There are plenty of nuances and scientists need to find «perfect balance» between all the components in order to manufacture flexible batteries was justified not only from an economic point of view, but also from the point of view of functionality.
