The First step on the moon was made in 1969, as part of an American space mission "Apollo 11". Neil Armstrong and buzz Aldrin stayed on the moon's surface for 2 hours and 30 minutes and most of that time they had to learn to walk. They realized that to walk on the moon is extremely difficult, and it is better to move the jumps so they are better balanced and faster reached the desired point. This method of movement is best suited for space technology, so scientists from Switzerland have created a jumping robot called SpaceBok.
His appearance it from the company Boston Dynamics. He also has four legs, but uses them not to walk and jump. According to the calculations of Swiss scientists, on the moon the robot can jump to a height of two meters separation from the surface of all four legs. During each of the "flight" he will be able to put the legs so that upon landing, immediately push off again and moved on.
All movement will be as smooth, because the limbs of the robot are equipped with special springs. They accumulate energy for each jump and soften the fall. The robot has already been tested inside a special room where the lunar recreated the conditions of low gravity — he can jump on the 1.3-meter height.
To test how well the robot falls to four legs, the researchers put it to the side and forced to bounce off two walls. What it looked like, you can look at 51 seconds into the video below. The robot has done its job so well that scientists have even played with it in some semblance of tennis.
In the future, the researchers want to test the robot under more realistic conditions. For example, they can take it to a special landfill or even to withdraw into the desert full of stones and other irregularities. Interesting — if it holds on the legs, or roll over and break?
When creating a hopping robot, Swiss scientists were inspired by the African antelope species, the Springbok. They often called antelopes-jumpers — they move mostly by jumping, lifting off the ground all four legs. They are able to jump to a height of 2-3 metres, and thus to accelerate up to 90 kilometers per hour. The Springboks are among the fastest animals — they can only chase the Cheetah, can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
