The human body much is known, but the immune system is still under a veil of mystery. It would seem that it works as a well coordinated mechanism, but no — scientists have found that in its processes an important role is played by the dynamics of chaos. Previously, it was used to explain the weather changes, and now can help in the creation of drugs from such dangerous diseases as diabetes and cancer. It seems that the mystery of immune function starts to unfold.
An Unexpected discovery was made by researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute. They studied the protein NF-KB, which is actively involved in the setting reaction of the immune system to emerging threats like all kinds of viruses. It was already known that this protein is constantly changing its concentration, which significantly affects the genes and cells of the body. It turned out that the main supporter of the protein in the setting of immune system are chaotic fluctuations, which explains the mathematical term "chaotic dynamics".
Scientists were surprised by the discovery since it was believed that the chaotic dynamics is impossible in living organisms. The study was the first step to healing diseases by changing the concentration fluctuations of the protein. It is known that cancer is associated with impaired signal transmission in cells — so with new knowledge, scientists will be able to establish the dynamics of cell function.
Results can have a huge impact on our understanding of the functioning of the immune system, and how you can avoid some of the most serious diseases, including diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's, said Hogue Mogens Jensen, co-author of the study.
In Addition to the development of new drugs, a new discovery may help to detect in advance the risk of disease. It will be necessary to withdraw cells and to investigate their condition.
