Paleontologists around the world are trying to learn as much about the animal world of the past. They are trying to learn how animals looked, what they eat and how they move. Scientists from Switzerland and Germany took a big step forward in this matter — they have created a robotic skeleton of a lizard that lived over 300 million years ago. To recreate realistic movements they used computer modeling and data collected during the excavation. The result is very interesting and is shown in the video.
The Skeleton is created based on an ancient animal called Orobates pabsti. It looked like a giant Salamander and has been in the important points of the evolutionary tree, between amphibians and mammals. The scientists chose it because it is the only ancient creature whose fossilized bones can be linked with fossil paw prints.
The first stage of the moving of the skeleton, scientists have studied the movements of modern salamanders, iguanas and caimans. With the help of x-rays, the researchers learned as they stand upright and how bent their spine and joints during movement. Taking into account these data and comparing them with the fossil footprints of ancient dinosaurs, they designed a computer model of substance so that when the movement of his bones and the statutes do not pop up.
The Created model was transferred into the real world with the help of a robot OroBOT. The researchers compared his way of moving with the gait of modern animals of this type. It turned out that the ancient Orobates pabsti were moving about as caimans — small relatives of alligators.
Paleontology have already answered many questions concerning the times before the advent of man. For example, scientists already know roughly what it would be with the dinosaurs . And they also know why life is preferred .
