If the orbital glitch confirmed liquid water on Mars may not be Source:

Some signs of presence of water on Mars has just dried up. Due to how processed the data of the spacecraft NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, he could see the signs of hydrated salts which in fact was not. This researchers wrote recently in Geophysical Research Letters. A lack of these salts may also mean that some sites offered to search for life on Mars, including the alleged flow of liquid water on the walls of Martian craters, dry and lifeless.

Study Leader Ellen Lisk and her colleagues found a problem when looking for the very perchlorates on the maps of Mars made by the orbiting apparatus with the use of the CRISM instrument. Perchlorate can reduce the freezing point of water at 80 degrees Celsius, which is enough to melt the ice in the cold Martian climate.

In a sense, on Mars there is no water?

To see, depending on the salt in other places on Mars, scientists have turned to chemical CRISM maps that show how light is reflected from the surface of Mars in hundreds of wavelengths. The obtained spectra allow scientists to identify specific minerals at the surface, based on how these minerals absorb or alter light.

Scientists have found a glitch, when looking for small signs of salts on the CRISM images. Assuming the Orbiter has already discovered large deposits of perchlorate, if they existed, the team wrote a search algorithm for smaller traces, occupying at least 10 pixels on the images CRISM. And saw perchlorates literally everywhere, including the crater, Jezero, which will be sent to Mars 2020 Rover.

Upon closer examination, however, Lisk and her colleagues noticed that perchlorates occur in places where for the formation of salts, there is no geological preconditions — and especially along the borders between light and dark surfaces. Perhaps the research results the MRO will need to be revised.
