Discovered neuronal connections responsible for the emergence of consciousness Source:

Mind – one of the greatest mysteries facing humanity. But where and how it occurs? Whether a consciousness exists or just the illusion masterfully created by the brain? The answers to these questions is incredibly complex, but scientists, fortunately, it doesn't stop. To try to understand exactly where in the brain consciousness arises, the authors of the new study conducted an experiment, which involved 98 subjects. In the study, most subjects were awake, some were under anesthesia, and the other observed disturbances of consciousness and brain diseases. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and machine-based algorithm of artificial intelligence, scientists have found that there are two biological neural networks, which are directly connected with consciousness. It seems so close to the most important secrets of mankind science has not yet been selected.

How are attention and consciousness?

Imagine that you need to do important work: you focus on a task but suddenly thoughts begin to wander and you start thinking about the weekend and about how great they will be. It lasts exactly as long as your boss or a colleague remind yourself of the message in the working live chat or phone call – still today many people work from home due to . Such “switching” of consciousness is automatic and is the result of two States of the brain: the posterior system of attention (DAT), through which we realize ourselves and the world and a network of passive mode of operation of the brain (DMN), which allows us to focus on themselves (their inner world).

In the human brain there are about 65 million neurons.

The Authors of the new study, which is published , believe that when one of these States is active, the second is automatically suppressed. In General, during the experiment, scientists were able to demonstrate the constantly evolving nature of the brain even when the person was under anesthesia or did not respond to impulses from the outside – using fMRI and machine algorithm based on artificial intelligence. The results obtained allowed to assume that both of these conditions – neural connections – are the brain functions of a higher order – that is responsible for thinking, speech, etc. the Authors believe that these functions are associated with consciousness and are suppressed when a person is unconscious.

We create a new picture of the brain, which is dynamically changing over time – the study authors write in their paper.

Brain alone “switches” neural networks

In the experiment, the scientists analyzed the patterns of brain activity in seconds from 98 subjects. the Patterns is a kind of pattern regularly repeated action. In the experiment part the subjects were awake or under anesthesia, have while the other portion of the subjects were observed disturbances of consciousness. In the study, researchers found that the brains very quickly “switched” from one network to another, and this took place regularly and according to certain patterns. It appeared that in patients under anesthesia and in patients with cerebrovascular accident the operation was significantly reduced. Moreover, the nature of “switching” between networks depended on, was the patient conscious or not.

According to the authors of the study, the obtained results will allow in the future to create a new picture of the human brain, which changes every second and that is what scientists believe is linked with consciousness. Let me remind you that in recent years, scientists are trying to detect areas of the brain responsible for consciousness. Despite the fact that the specific region to allocate and failed, year after year, discovery after discovery, scientists gradually make up an overall picture of how the brain works – and this, for a moment, the most complex organ of the human body – slowly but surely approaching the mysteries of consciousness. If you are interested in this topic and you are not afraid to question their beliefs, read our great material about the mysteries of consciousness and about the people who have dedicated their life to finding answers to one of the most difficult issues of our time – .
