Why don't we live in constant fear of death? Source:

still from the film “breaking bad”

Movie Character — a Professor of literature at the University, played by johnny Depp — finds out he had cancer and he left to live no more than six months. In the process of realizing this unfortunate fact the hero Depp continues to lecture to students and one of them asks, warned their parents that they will die. But really, warned? Because we're all going to die, just don't know when. But you should think of it as the skin runs cold and we are trying to be distracted from these gloomy thoughts. Recently, scientists have wondered about the fact that if we know about our own mortality, why not stay in fear and not experiencing daily ?

Existential dread

In work published in the journal , the researchers write that the human mind is arranged in such a way as to automatically avoid awareness of his own mortality. However, as it was realized this protective mechanism at the neuronal level remains a mystery. So the experts decided to test how the brain protects itself from an existential threat.

Our brain, the researchers believe, simply does not recognize the fact that associated with us. It is for this reason we continue to go to work, meet friends, travel and just live the usual life. After all, if you are constantly thinking about what our days are numbered, all life risks being in a deep pit of despair and meaninglessness of their own existence. As reported by the study's lead author Yair Dor-Ziderman edition of when the brain receives information about his own mortality, triggered some mechanism that causes us to think about the fact that this information was unreliable, so to believe it is not necessary. This was the conclusion reached by scientists who conducted a special test that is designed to receive signals of the brain associated with surprise.

Belief in life after death helps many people to cope with existential terror.

In the experiment, the subjects watched the screen while the researchers monitored their brain activity. Then they flashed pictures of faces on the screen — sometimes it was the face of the subject — before showing an image of another person. When a new face is illuminated, the brain was making unexpected signals, so as seen the image did not meet the expectations of the subject. Also on the screen next to the individuals there were words associated with death, for example, or “the funeral”.

When people saw his face next to one of these words, the prediction system in the brain is disconnected and have not detected any unexpected signals. The results indicate that we protect ourselves from the threat of death and all-inclusive existential horror, not making predictions about that day when we are gone. Obviously, such a system of self-defense is needed for the brain to continue to live and pass on their genes to the next generations as do all living beings on our planet.

However, it seems to me that in spite of such self-defense, we can't completely avoid the topic , but because unconsciously every day of his life struggling with existential horror. We are trying to bring sense in your life and here everyone chooses for himself what helps him best: someone goes to Church, someone having children, someone is engaged in charity, someone who dedicates his life to science or art or combines all of the above. Anyway, having certain mechanisms of protection against fear of death we are, however, not should strongly avoid making taboo. In the end, the death — is an integral part of life, and of her, whether we like it or not, all the same, should not be forgotten.
