The most popular sweetener turned deadly Source:

Scientists from the British University of Sussex has made a report, which said that previous studies the most popular artificial sweetener – aspartame – can be considered invalid. After reviewing the results of examinations of research of European food safety (EFSA) on the basis of which decisions were made about the security of this sakharozameniteli, British experts found them in material breach. On the findings of British scientists reported in a press release published on the website MedicalXpress.

What is aspartame?

Aspartame is a very popular artificial sweetener, a sugar substitute. It is used in the production of thousands of different products, including diet soft drinks. On the packaging of a product can be labeled as a food additive E951.

British experts report that in 2013, the European Agency for food safety (EFSA) has completely ignored the results of 73 studies that discussed the negative health consequences of consuming this food Supplement. The experts EFSA accepted as reliable data, 84 percent of all scientific papers, which spoke of "non-obvious" dangers of food sweetener.

Most interestingly, say researchers from the University of Sussex, ignored many of the 73 studies was much more reliable in their findings than those which supposedly confirmed the safety of aspartame.

Professor Erik millstone, an expert at the University of Sussex policy chemical safety of food products and one of the authors of the new report calls to suspend the authorization of the sale or use of aspartame in the European Union until a thorough and independent review of the documents, which were not taken into account in the study of health safety of this substance.

According to the scientist, giving permission for the use of the sugar substitute, the experts of the Commission, EFSA relied on contradictory and unconfirmed data.

Our study shows that EFSA scientists have not paid attention to the numerous violations in the "promising" research, which said about the harmlessness of aspartame. But they found fault with even the smallest faults in all works, which said that aspartame may be unsafe. It seems to me that here we can not exclude that the decision of the experts could wag commercial interests, since all the meetings of the expert commissions was held behind closed doors, says millstone.

the dangers of aspartame

As pointed out by MedicalXpress scientists since the 70-ies of years warned about the risks of brain damage, liver cancer and lung, brain lesions and neuroendocrine disorders resulting from the consumption of aspartame.

Colleagues Eric Millstone noted that his report was very important and timely. Today's health calls for reducing the consumption of sugar, but most of the food industry – especially manufacturers of soft drinks — just replace it with artificial sweeteners.

The Most correct approach, researchers believe, will be not just reducing the amount of sugar in foods and beverages, but also in reducing the use of artificial alternatives.
