Quantum teleportation: everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask Source:

Last month saw two interesting events in the field of quantum technologies, Chinese scientists teleported photons of light from the ground station to the space satellite and the annual conference of leading experts of quantum physics in Moscow. The publication Business Insider was able to catch her on Dr. Eugene Police from the Niels Bohr Institute, one of the leading experts in quantum teleportation, and to question him on a variety of issues, including on the outstanding success of his Chinese colleagues.

"Teleportation of this kind was conducted in the laboratory since 1997, however, Chinese scientists have managed to achieve this amazing technological effect at a distance", — said Polzik.

In 2012, the team of European scientists have successfully teleported photons between two Canary Islands. Between the sending and receiving devices, the distance was 141 km. Chinese researchers have managed to break this record in July, when they successfully teleported photons a distance of over 500 kilometers.

We have been dreaming about a similar technology from Star trek, although our intuition always said that teleportation is impossible in principle. However the physics of our real world in which we daily reside, a little like the physics of the world of quanta. Here the laws of falling rock from the cliff and control the electrons and individual photons of light are completely different from what we're used to seeing. Therefore, in this bizarre world, maybe almost everything, including teleportation. On how to understand all this? We should start with quantum entanglement.

What is quantum entanglement?

Sometimes, two quantum particles are specularly related. Whatever happens with one of these particles, the same thing will happen with another. Even if they are separated by great distances. They are still two separate objects, but are identical in all. When two particles share their wealth, then such particles are called entangled.

"Suppose I created a pair of entangled photons", — Polzik explains.

"I leave one at home, and the other is sent by laser to an orbiting space satellite, hoping that the photon will reach the destination. Teleportation can be considered successful only when the division of state entanglement of two photons between the transmitting and receiving stations".

The Main technical difficulty of the process of teleportation is the transmission of a photon at a certain distance from the confusing particles. In the case of the Chinese experiment, one photon was in the lab on Earth, and the second was sent successfully to the orbital satellite. Changes with photon on the Earth in the framework of manipulations of scientists has also paved the way for a photon located in space, is quantum teleportation in its purest form.

How to understand if satellite need a photon, and not some random particle of light?

To Make it relatively easy through a process called spectral filtering. It allows scientists to identify and track individual photons of light, marking them with a unique identification number.

"You are aware of the frequency of the photon you send, you are aware of its focus. The satellite is aimed at the source of the sending, which is located on the Ground. If you have a very good optical equipment on both sides, this optics only sees the source, and nothing more" — continues explanation Polzik.

Method of spectral filtering indifferent to "noise" in the form of other photons. For example, when conducting the same experiment in the Canary Islands, the transfer was conducted under a clear Sunny sky.

did the transfer of millions of photons to a satellite, but to the point of destination reached only 900. Why?

The further you try to send the convoluted photon, the less effective this process becomes. Moreover, the Earth's atmosphere is in constant motion, so to lose the photons on their way into space easy.

"Even if there was no atmosphere, you still need to focus the beam of light, so he was sent to the satellite. If you Shine a laser pointer in the palm, the point of light is small, but it is necessary to remove the laser and the dot is getting bigger – it's the law of diffraction", — says Polzik.

From the earth the light is quite difficult to get to space (to optical receiver mounted on an orbital satellite). He is greatly distorted, so most of the photons simply goes nowhere.

"to Achieve successful teleportation is possible only for a very short period of time. In General it is very impractical, but nevertheless ways of using this technology it is possible to find" — continues Polzik.

Quantum teleportation is the instantaneous transmission of data?

Not quite. Teleportirovat objects do not disappear and then reappear somewhere else. Scientists use state of entanglement to transfer information about the quantum state of one photon to another. Without this information, the photon will have to physically overcome the entire distance between the transmitter and the receiver. And again, the information is transmitted instantly. This is only possible when the sender makes the measurement of the quantum state of your photon, thereby changing the state of the photon at the receiver. Because quantum entanglement is essentially one photon becomes a different photon.

So what is it all about?

Quantum teleportation is able to prove the concept of the ability to create sirsasana global communication network. As the key that opens the lock, the message is transmitted on the quantum network will reach only the addressee, which has a properly complicated photon, which will allow this post to and read.

Albert Einstein once described quantum entanglement "spooky action at a distance", but this long-range interaction is a fundamental component, due to which it works. And one day he can become the driver of our communication in the future.
