Electrical synchronization of the brain regions can cure depression Source:

Brain Stimulation electrical pulses is actively used for the treatment of various mental illnesses. Most often, this requires surgical implantation of electrodes, but the method called transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), does not imply intervention. Thanks to him, researchers have already managed to cure auditory hallucinations in schizophrenics and to reduce sensations of pain in the lower back of one of the patients. New its-kind study showed that the technology is also able to cure deep depression.

Unlike deep brain stimulation (Deep Brain Stimulation), tACS uses a milder electrical impulses and sinhroniziruete the activity of different areas of the brain. Researchers have noted that patients with deep depression electric oscillations of the left frontal region of the brain occur much more actively than the right. To fix the so-called "frontal alpha-asymmetry", the researchers decided to balance the activity of both areas using the tACS-stimulation.

The Experiment was conducted on 32 patients with severe depression. They were randomly divided into three groups: a placebo group, control group with stimulation with a frequency of 40 Hz, and an experimental group with therapy at a frequency of 10 Hz. Each patient took a 40-minute promotion for five days. After the treatment period, the researchers periodically assessed their condition.

To their surprise, 70% of patients from the 10-gercevoj group reported that their depression symptoms decreased by at least 50%. Other groups of participants also talked about improvements, but their results were much lower. According to the head of the study Flavio Frohlich, it was the first of its kind research, and they have not yet decided how to use the results. In any case, they intend to test the method on a larger sample of people, as in the long term it can help hundreds of patients get rid of their severe condition.

Proved that exposure to different areas of the brain can cause the patient a different feeling. For example, in February it became known that during operations in humans can be specially by stimulating a region called the Cingulum.
