If our eyes were able to perceive infrared light, we could easily distinguish any objects in the dark. The fact that the infrared light comes almost from all the objects around us, but their waves are so long that the photoreceptors of the mammalian eye simply cannot perceive them. Researchers from the Medical school of the University of Massachusetts have developed nanoparticles that can serve as tiny sensors to capture infrared rays and to give people and animals the night vision.
Getting into the eye, these nanoparticles in the form of droplets are delivered to the photoreceptors of the retina and are attached to them. Being on the retinal cells, the nanoparticles capture the long-infrared rays and emit the short waves in the visible range. These waves are absorbed by photoreceptors, which send to the brain such signals, whatever they were, if the retina were visible light.
The efficiency of the nanoparticles was verified in the experiment with mice. After receiving a dose of nanoparticles, the photoreceptors of the eye of mice began to shorten the infrared wavelengths of 980 nm to 535 nm. While infrared light took on a green tint. Due to this effect, the laboratory mouse has been able without any problems to go through the maze with obstacles in complete darkness and even in good light.
The Only side effect was the clouding of the cornea, but it passed in about a week. The very ability to see in the dark remained for ten weeks.
It is believed that the new development will be used in the creation of new military technologies. It will certainly find a use in medicine — getting new knowledge, scientists hope to find an effective way to treat color blindness.
