Thanks to the amber, scientists are discovering a lot about the living organisms that existed millions of years ago. The remains of organisms inside amber are called — these are the chunks of fossil resin has been found by paleontologists from the Chinese University of geological Sciences in Beijing. They contained the feather of unknown bird which has a very unusual structure. There is speculation that it was used not only for flights and attract females, but also to protect.

Feathers, older than 100 million years old, were stored inside 31 piece of Burmese amber Cretaceous period. They clearly belong to that ancient birds were so long that exceeds the length of the body. In addition to flight control, they need birds to attract attention and pairing, but the unusual structure of ancient remains has revealed yet another function.

Paleontologist Jingmai’Connor explained that in modern birds the Central core of feathers has the form of a closed cylinder. A fossil of the same feather open from below and has a minimum of chipping. Structure and relatively dull coloration suggests that for the growth of these feathers required a minimum of energy — so they were disposable and easily discarded.

The Researchers believe that this plumage on the tail could be something like bait for predators. In case of danger, the bird may lose feathers like a lizard drops his tail to escape from the enemy. To study the process of emergence of such feathers, the scientists needed more samples. Fortunately, it is found in amber, the feathers retained its volume and provide the opportunity to examine their entire structure.

The Study was led by paleontologist Lida Qin. She's already very famous in their field — in 2016, her team discovered well-preserved .

What do you think, what else could be useful unusual feathers? Your bold assumption, write in the comments or at .
