Scientists have found that Viagra reduces the risk of colon cancer Source:

The Drug sildenafil, also popularly known under the brand name "Viagra" is designed to enhance potency in men. Initially the drug was synthesized in order to improve blood flow to the myocardium and for the treatment of angina and ischemic heart disease but during clinical trials it was found out that sildenafil has a pronounced effect on the blood flow in the pelvic organs. In a recent study, experts from the University of Augusta (USA) came to the conclusion that a small number of Viagra regularly adopted person, significantly reduces the risk of bowel.

American scientists during their research found that relatively small doses of sildenafil taken daily, significantly reduced the number of polyps that occur in the intestine of laboratory animals. These polyps, in turn, often lead to the development of colorectal cancer colon. This new feature of the popular drug pharmacists opens up a completely new field of application. "Viagra" for the last twenty years have explored the subject of alternative applications of the drug for medical purposes. And now scientists finally got lucky.

The Study is based on the idea that elevated levels of a chemical known as cyclic guanosine monophosphate that can inhibit some types of colon cancer by reducing excessive cell proliferation. As you know, Viagra inhibits the enzyme PDE5, which was previously found in cells of the colon. This allows the enzyme to increase the level of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, thereby reducing the amount of proliferating cells and, as a consequence, reducing the risk of mutations leading to the occurrence of polyps and cancer.

The Study was carried out on the specially genetically modified mice containing a mutation, leading to an increase occurs in the intestinal polyps. Those rodents that were exposed daily to small doses of Viagra, demonstrated 50% fewer polyps than the second group. In parallel with sildenafilom scientists also tested a second drug – linelimit. He showed even greater efficacy, but because of its extremely unpleasant side effects (e.g., severe diarrhea), to use the drug for prevention of colon cancer is not possible. The research results were published in the journal .
