Cosmic rush: the real problem in the way of conquering outer space Source:

A New study shows that the so-called space fever is not a myth. With a long presence in microgravity, the body temperature may rise, and during exercise it increases even more. To such conclusion the German scientists, who studied the physical performance of astronauts aboard the International space station.

In General, in the huge list of health problems associated with being in space and facing a long dream of space travel, you can add another item.

At the same time, the researchers note that the body temperature rises, not instantaneously. Increases in this index may occur within a few months, until the human body gets used to the conditions of the absence of gravity. This, at least, the data say about the state of health, which were collected before the flight, while on the ISS, and after his return astronauts back to Earth.

Data show that after two and a half months in orbit during exercise the body temperature of astronauts regularly exceeded 40 degrees. The average temperature usually rises by 1 degree, and is 37 degrees even when the astronaut does nothing.

"We have developed a new system that can take temperature readings from the skin with sensors that can capture even small changes in the temperature of arterial blood," — explains Hanns-Christian Gunga of the charité Clinic in Berlin, one of the researchers of this project.

Despite the fact that doctors and scientists are working on solving some of the problems associated with prolonged space travel, actual studies of the impact of the effects of microgravity on the Central temperature of the body, which on Earth is regulated by our internal biological systems, there has been little. At the same time to monitor the body temperature in space is very important, especially if we ever want to go to other planets of the Solar system. Ultimately, hyperthermia and heat stroke during the flight to Mars is unlikely to be someone good.

In the new study, German scientists removed the temperature data from the 11 astronauts, starting to collect information for 90 days before the flight and ending 30 days after return. During this time people wore on his forehead is particularly sensitive sensors. These sensors have shown that the Central temperature of the body in microgravity is growing faster than on Earth. Scientists attribute this to the fact that the space environment interferes with the proper working of those factors that regulate body temperature in terrestrial conditions. For example, changing the level of the Federal heat to the environment, and the amount of sweat that our body releases for its cooling. In addition, in space, the sweat evaporates much slower, which in turn can become a problem during prolonged physical stress, increasing the possibility of overheating of the body.

"In zero gravity our bodies becomes very difficult to get rid of excess heat. The lack of transfer of heat between the body and the external environment can be a real problem and cause overheating", — said Gunga.

The increase in the average temperature of the body may be critical to our health and well-being, the researchers say. Numerous scientific studies say that daily the Central temperature of the person at physical labor should not exceed 38 degrees.

The results of recent research scientists shared in the journal Nature.
