Archaeologists have found a Mayan temple with thousands of years of artifacts

In 1966, the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza was found a system of caves. To record the find, the locals called the archaeologist Victor Segovia Pinto. He wrote a report, but excavations did not, and residents simply closed the entrance. It turned out that the archaeologist, and the inhabitants were too hasty — if they were about 400 meters along a narrow passage, they would have been in a cell with more than 155 artifacts with thousands of years of age. Archaeologists from the project Gran Acuífero Maya found them only half a century later, and learned a lot of interesting items.

According to mythology, the Maya, the deep caves are portals to the underworld, called Xibalba, the lords of which infect people with diseases. In these "places of fear" people could get fresh water and usually sacrificed. One theory says that the Maya people died from a severe drought between 800 and 1000 years BC, it is possible that in this cave they had artifacts dedicated to the God of rain Tlaloc.

Among the hundreds of items are ceremonial vessels with the image of deities, stone throne in the form of a Jaguar and on the tray where you put the hearts of the sacrificed people. Pottery and tools were broken, presumably during the rituals. Many of the items in the cave covered by a layer of carbonate that is formed under the influence of underground waters for many centuries. Based on the artistic style of the items it was suggested that they were made somewhere in the 7-10 centuries.

Excavations in the cave was started only in 2018. It is possible that after some time, archaeologists will find more ancient artifacts and, perhaps, human remains.
