related musculoskeletal disorders, often lead to the fact that people in varying degrees lose the ability to properly navigate. One of the most common of these diseases is osteoporosis. This disease causes changes in the bone tissue, causing bones to become fragile and brittle. These changes are considered irreversible. Rather, they were considered as such, because recently a team of scientists from Duke University have been able to turn over osteoporosis around.

What is osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease associated with loss of calcium amid the General decline of vitamin D in the body. In most cases it develops . As a result of reduced calcium content the bones become more fragile and easily damaged. Due to osteoporosis often occur fractures of the hip, forearm and vertebrae and other bones.

treatment of osteoporosis

At the moment all preparations for the treatment of this disease aims at maintaining the patient's condition or withdrawal symptoms. That is, the increase in the content of calcium and vitamin D. However, scientists from Duke University during a series of studies have detected the receptor (in this case they are called adenosine receptors A2B), the activation of which not only stops, but reverses the deterioration of bone.

The Most widely used drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis can prevent further bone loss, but they do not help to restore the bone itself, — said one of the authors of Sini Varghese, Professor of biomedical engineering and orthopedics. We found biochemical receptor that when activated can do both.

In 2014, Mr. Varghese studied the effects of calcium phosphate on the regeneration of bone tissue. He found that adenosine acting at the A2B receptor, plays a particularly important role in stimulating bone growth. After this it was decided to study this system in more detail. In the course of further experiments, the research team studied a population of mice that have been artificially caused by the osteoporosis.

The Experts measured levels of expression , which helps produce adenosine, and the levels of adenosine in cells and in the intercellular space. Then the researchers tested whether increasing the level of adenosine in mice to reverse the devastating effects of the disease. But instead of «pump» adenosine in the body of rodents, they injected them with a drug containing a molecule developed by the pharmaceutical company Bayer. This molecule activates the A2B receptor, which causes the production of adenosine within the body.

The Mice that received the drug made a full recovery, — said the scientists. Moreover, their bones were in the same condition as in the control group of rodents that from osteoporosis will not suffer.

While the identification of pharmaceutical targets capable of reversing osteoporosis, is a very important discovery, the creation of a drug that can activate collagen production without the side effects is a challenging task. We must not forget that adenosine is produced naturally and plays an important role in various life processes. From the neurons to the regulation of vessels.

Therefore, despite considerable success in creating medicine, scientists at the moment, need to find a way of drug delivery and activation of adenosine receptors directly in the bone tissue. At the moment the research group is engaged in search of such paths. And once they succeed, will speak about the beginning of clinical trials involving human subjects.
