IBM has proposed the use of a measure of the "quantum volume", which is expected to double every year — and it will be the equivalent of Moore's law, which is observed in traditional computing. According to Moore's law the number of transistors on a chip, and hence the density should double about every two years. So far it worked but on the new approach —quantum — computers with its own rules.

Quantum machines rely on quantum bits, or qubits, in the manipulation of data. But the simple addition of qubits may not improve the performance of the machine. Because of their fragile quantum state can be disturbed by even the slightest fluctuations or changes in temperature — a phenomenon known as "noise". As a result, the calculations will be error.

IBM proposed a quantum space as a suitable natural measure of progress. He still thinks the qubits, but also includes the error frequency and quality of communication between the qubits.

At the meeting of the American physical society this week, IBM will present results showing that the quantum volume of cars has doubled 4 in 2017 up to 8 in 2018. The company says it recently introduced the Q System One machine with a capacity of 16.

At the moment this metric develops similar to Moore's law for traditional computing. According to this law the number of transistors on a silicon microchip doubles roughly every two years, however, there are signs that the pace is slowing down.

IBM is a leader in quantum computing and first made their cars available through the computing cloud for use by others. However, the company faces stiff competition from Rigetti Computing and .

Development of a better way to compare these quantum computers are very important, but each company will promote the criteria and measures that support its own hardware and software. Therefore, the new quantum Moore's law would imply that the volume of PR quantum machines will double every year…
