LHCb found new hints on possible deviations from the Standard model

The LHCb Experiment, which operates in the framework of the Large hadron Collider at CERN, showed a curious anomaly in the decay of certain particles. If this information is confirmed we will receive new physical phenomena not predicted by the Standard model of particle physics. The observed signal still has weak statistical significance, but reinforces similar evidence from previous studies. Upcoming data and subsequent analyses will allow to determine whether these hints are cracks in the Standard model or the statistical fluctuations like this .

Recently at a seminar in CERN LHCb collaboration presented a new long-awaited results for a particular decay B0mesons produced in collisions at the Large hadron Collider. The standard model of particle physics predicts the probability of a set of possible modes B0-mesons, and possible discrepancies with these data will be a signal of new physics.

In this study, the LHCb collaboration studied the decays of B0-meson to an excited kaon and a pair of electrons or muons. The muon is 200 times heavier than electron, but in the Standard model the interaction is mostly identical to interaction of the electron is known as the universality of the leptons. Lepton universality predicts that small and expect the effect caused by the difference of the masses, the electron and the muons must be produced with the same probability for the particular decay B0. But LHCb found that instead, the decays involving muons occur much less frequently.

Although the discrepancy with the Standard model is potentially exciting, it remains at the level of 2.2 to 2.5 Sigma, which is not enough to draw a final conclusion. But the result is intriguing, because the recent LHCb measurement with the appropriate decay showed similar behavior.

Despite the great interest, these hints are insufficient to come to a final approval. Earlier there were many measurements that support the symmetry between electrons and muons, though of another nature. To find out whether these hints statistical fluctuation or the first signs of a new particle that will expand and complete the Standard model of particle physics, need more data and more observations of this decay. Measurement, which is discussed, was made on the basis of sample data from the first period of operation of the TANK (first run). If the new measurements do indicate physics beyond the Standard model, a large data sample collected during the second run, will allow to confirm these effects.
