Pacific Drone Challenge — the first ever drone flight at 8300 miles

To fly a far enough distance now is only capable of military drones. But soon such "long-lived" drones may appear in the consumer segment. In the event Pacific Drone Challenge teams from around the world will have to collect an unmanned aerial vehicle, able to cross the Pacific ocean without stopping for recharging.

The Distance that will be necessary to overcome drones, equals to 8300 km. The starting point is located on the Pacific coast of Japan and the end of the route — in Silicon valley in the United States. The Pacific Drone Challenge organizers expect that the participants to achieve the goal to develop fundamentally new types of unmanned aerial vehicles based on innovative technologies.

Now the longest flight belongs to the drone, overcame the English channel in 72 minutes. But this is still not enough, since, according to conservative estimates, to bridge the gap in 8300 miles the drone will need to stay in the air a few dozen times more. In addition to the condition of the impossibility of stopping to charge during the flight, the organizers no longer impose any requirements on manufacturers.

It is Worth noting that the drones design is required to overcome the Pacific already exist. For example, the company Sabrewing Aircraft Company (which had expressed a desire to participate in the challenge) for several years has been working on the creation of the UAV with fixed wing, equipped with four propellers, driven by electric motors. He, according to the technical and technological characteristics, are able to land and take off from a small strip of the airfield, and the maximum range of its flight is equal to 8800 miles. Competition Sabrewing Aircraft Company at the moment is a Japanese Corporation iRobotics. However, the specs of its drone, the Japanese prefer not to.
