Scientists from Russia and Canada have found a way to simplify the architecture of quantum computers

Quantum computers are able to produce very complex calculations due to the unique architecture, but, despite the fact that they are the future, extremely difficult device quantum computers does not allow to create a sufficiently powerful system. But according to an article recently published in the journal Nature, a group of physicists from Russia and Canada succeeded in creating the first silicon chip, able to store multi-dimensional qubits, and to manipulate them. The new approach will simplify the architecture of quantum computers to speed up their creation.

Recall that qubits in quantum computers perform both the function of memory cells, and the function of the computing module. They can store both a zero and unit, thanks to the laws of quantum physics. Combine multiple qubits allows to quickly solve complex and extremely resource-intensive tasks. As told in an interview to RIA «news» one of the leading scientists of the Russian quantum centre, Alexei Ustinov

«Physics pretty quickly learned to produce single qubits, able to live long enough for doing calculations. However, attempts to combine several qubits are faced with great difficulties due to the fact that to write and read data from them is not as easy as it initially seemed».

Therefore, many scientists are trying to combine qubits into a single network, and try to accommodate as much as possible the number of cells of quantum information in one qubit. A group of scientists from the Russian Federation and Canada, headed by Professor of the University ITMO Roberto Morandotti managed to create a chip that allows «compacted» almost unlimited amount of quantum data into pairs of entangled photons.

The New development is a microcavities — hollow silicon ring, inside which the light will move in a circle, Bouncing off the walls. The chip can be build so that certain pulses will be amplified and others suppressed, which makes it possible to obtain laser pulses with «comb» range, which is useful to encode individual memory cells. Through this approach, the number of values encoded in a similar light qubit, it will depend on how well the devices will be able to catch the changing light.

«Combining on a single chip generate multidimensional entangled photons with their ultra-fast processing, we showed that quantum systems can be controlled using standard telecommunication components such as modulators and frequency filters. This will facilitate the development and dissemination of technology».
