Russian satellite to protect against ballistic missiles burned up in the atmosphere Source:

In the 1950s, years after the development first of Intercontinental ballistic missiles, States began developing systems to track and defend against missile attacks. In Russia, this system was called "Oko-1" and one of its parts was the Sputnik "Kosmos-2430" — it was released into space 23 October 2007 with the Plesetsk cosmodrome carrier rocket "Lightning-M". Ground base lost contact with the staff between 2012 and 2014 and we now know that it is completely ceased to exist, having burned in the dense layers of Earth's atmosphere.

The descent of the device from orbit, announced the command of the aerospace defense of North America (NORAD). It happened because of the total consumption of energy, the satellite burnt in dense layers of the atmosphere over the Atlantic ocean at an altitude of about 100 km of Its fragments fell into the South Pacific.

The command of the aerospace forces of the Russian Federation said that the unit was de-orbited following the initially developed plan. The operation was carried out on January 5 at 09:48 am, and the trajectory is constantly kept under control. It was also pointed out that "Kosmos-2430" was decommissioned from the orbital group still 2012.

Currently, Russia is creating an updated echelon satellites, which will also engage in space defense against ballistic missiles. One of the new devices is a space satellite Tundra, which was released into orbit on 17 November, 2015 at the carrier rocket "Soyuz-2.1 b". The device is able to detect not only ballistic missiles, but the projectiles launched from submarines. It is known that the satellite is able to transmit commands to the Commission of retaliation.
