In the distant 90's I first tested one of the first models of virtual reality glasses. The device was cumbersome, and virtual reality is quite primitive, but even those impressions I had to come to a complete delight. I was playing , seeing the world through the eyes of the protagonist. Over the past decade, technology has leaped forward, and not so long ago, publisher Bethesda has released a game called Doom VFR, which again takes us to the Mars lab overrun by demons. I just couldn't pass by and write a review on this product.
Game: VFR Doom
the Platform: PlayStation VR with HTC Vive
the Genre: First Person Shooter
the release date: December 1, 2017
the Developer: id Software
the Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Initially, this review was not planned by me from the word "all". Indeed, just last year about the new game series Doom, who returned in game industry good old ultra violence. It seemed to me that id Software simply adapts his game to the realities of the virtual space and all. Replay of last year's Thriller in the second round I really did not want to. So the game in the review initially, I ask the publisher did not. But in fact it turned out that Doom VFR is a separate independent piece with its unique script, locations and, of course, the gameplay, sharpened by virtual reality. How is there to resist?
The Name Doom VFR refers to the legendary cannon BFG (Big Fu%#ing Gun). In other words, the acronym VFR personally, I see the phrase Virtual Fu%#ing Reality, and something tells us that the way it really is. The plot revolves around the nameless security of the United aerospace Corporation (UAC), a consciousness which after his death transferred into an artificial body. If you were hoping to see in the game the legendary DoomGuy (or "Soldier's Rock"), I hasten to disappoint you — he's not here. The sole purpose of the protagonist is to restore order on the station, as well as closing the portal to hell in the Martian laboratory in a dense flow the rod terrible demons from hell. In principle, nothing new, but the way all this is implemented, deserves special attention.
First, the degree of immersion in the game thanks to the headset virtual reality PlayStation VR (this version of the game today I overlook) has increased incredibly. You are among the deserted Martian research complex, teeming with all sorts of demons. Graphically, the game is of course inferior to full Doom, released last year. Nevertheless, the game looks very nice in terms of design and not really hurt the eyes some visual compromises. The developers have tried to make it so that the player was most comfortable and familiar to be back in their favorite game, albeit here in an extraordinary way. Sure Doom VFR for HTC Vive boasts more advanced graphics, but in the absence of I have this headset, to really compare the quality of the two versions I have no capabilities.
Secondly, the game offers us not one, but three management models. The first is the standard DualShock 4 controller, which comes bundled with every PlayStation 4 console. You can navigate either by using the analog sticks, or use the familiar method of teleportation from point "A" to point "B". With the help of special buttons and aiming point place nearby where you want to move, release the button and move back almost instantly. It does not break game mechanics and does not make you "invulnerable" — no need to worry. Such movement is limited by the distance, so run from evil demons such a straightforward way, you will not succeed.
The Second control scheme – two PlayStation Move controller. This method, unlike the DualShock 4 allows you to independently control both hands: in one you have a weapon and second grenade that you can throw at opponents. But this method is bad because the Move controllers there are no analog stick. You can teleport, Streif left and right to move backward and forward and also to turn sharply 180 degrees. Smoothly be rotated around its axis will not work, and it spoils all the impression of such control schemes completely. I mean 30 minutes trying to master this approach to movement, but in the end I got angry and switched to the third scheme, which will tell you below.
The Third scheme is a great gun PlayStation Aim, which debuted in conjunction with the release , of which I told you not so long ago. This controller in the form of assault rifles, there are two analog stick, allowing you to move anywhere, as well as a full set of useful buttons (which in contrast to the Move have normal size). The truth here is to control the left hand, which is a grenade, separately will not work. But it does not matter. But to aim from the gun – a real pleasure, and the move becomes much nicer, than using Move or DualShock 4. Having carefully studied all the available control schemes, I came to the conclusion that the PlayStation Aim – the best option in any case. And if you are lucky to have such a controller, use it. In the second place the DualShock 4, as it is a middle ground between immersion and maneuverability. The main thing – do not use the PlayStation Move, as it is the most "curve" diagram of the three. That is very strange, considering that in some games (even in the same Skyrim) the controllers felt very good.
The Combat system is simple and effective, like steel rail. In the right hand weapon, left – grenade. The Arsenal of the protagonist are familiar to all fans of the Doom pistol, plasma rifle, shotgun, Gatling gun, the BFG and other weapons. The bullets in the game are in great abundance, so that the experience for them is not worth it. A pleasant novelty VR version of the game was the ability to "wear down the enemy at a run", in other words, a good hurt, and then teleport directly into his body, blasting him to pieces. This technique has replaced the bloody Glory Kills from the previous game. Inside virtual reality, this approach feels quite reasonable and even convenient. For me, it is no discomfort is caused.
Separately, I would once again mention the incredible music which impressed me in last year's game. This is a very cool mixture of aggressive metal and dubstep, completely enveloping me on all sides and adjusts it to the correct way. To deal with the demons under such a great soundtrack – a real pleasure! Hard riffs, 12-string guitar interspersed with a frantic electronic rhythms create a unique atmosphere in which you dissolve completely. No, really, for the music I really ready to love this game endlessly.
Problems in the game, of course, too. In addition to the above a bad way to move with PlayStation Move, I would have said not the most convenient and correct way to switch between different schemes of control character. For example, when I switched between the PlayStation Move and Aim, found a virtual projection of his gun somewhere in the five feet in front of me, and I couldn't manage it. She just hung in the air in a static position. Attempts to reset the position of the hands in space by pressing the Options button to nothing lead. Because of this I had to restart the game from the last checkpoint. Only after that, everything more or less normalized. But the main drawback for someone will certainly be the duration of the game. It can go literally for 3-4 hours. Although the cost of the VR project is very budget – total 859 rubles.the
The Brutality of the gameplay is through the roof. the
What can I say, summing up the written above? Doom VFR is a short but extremely eventful ride for virtual reality. In this case, Bethesda didn't go the way of porting the original game, as was the case with Skyrim VR, and created something new, with a separate alternative plot and main character. The game pleases the higher the degree of involvement of the player in an event action. You are excited to slash demons to pieces under the fucking music, effectively shooting from powerful guns, throw grenades and Dodge from enemy shots, being at this point directly inside the game, not watching her through the TV screen. Spoil the overall picture not a good control scheme with the PlayStation Move, the short length of the game, and several not very nice bugs. That's why I put Doom VFR 7 out of 10....
Many people are extremely skeptical about a hybrid game console when it was announced at the end of 2016.
for all its advantages of modern augmented reality technology can put virtual objects in real-life.
