NASA found the lost 8 years ago, the Indian lunar Orbiter

From time to Time launched the spacecraft losing contact with the Ground, and in most such cases, such events are the latest Chapter in their history. One of the latest findings of the Agency was launched them into space to study solar activity in 2006 and lost in 2014. Using the search radar, the jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of NASA in Pasadena (California, USA) was able to locate the two lost space probes still active Lunar reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), sent to the moon in 2009, and the spacecraft "Chandrayaan-1" India's space research organization, launched from Earth in 2008. The last find was much harder, as the probe has a fairly compact size (the device is similar to a cube with sides of 1.5 m) and was considered as finally lost.

"Find LRO was relatively easy. We had data from its navigation systems and accurate information about its orbit when connection is lost. According to these data we found him", — says Marina Brozović, a specialist in radar equipment from JPL.

"Search the Indian probe "Chandrayaan-1" require a little more detective work, because the last contact with the satellite was already in August of 2009."

First, the JPL team used orbital calculations to try to find out where they could be "Chandrayaan-1". The probe was decided to look at the height of 200 kilometers above the surface of the moon in a polar orbit of the satellite. Then specialists of the NASA 70-meter antenna of the Observatory Goldstone began microwave sensing space above the North pole of the satellite, to check for apparatus for ground radar. And work gave a positive result. Technique twice recorded the presence of a small object in the search area.

Over the next three months with the 100-meter telescope Greenbank in West Virginia, and also the equipment of the Arecibo Observatory, the experts listened to reflected from the spacecraft signals. The effectiveness of radar detection of tiny spacecraft showed that the method can be useful in future lunar missions.

The unit Itself is "Chandrayaan-1" India is the first attempt to reach the moon. During his 10-month activity from October 2008 to August 2009, the probe has completed all its tasks and conducted including chemical and geological mapping.
