Lockheed Martin showed where the astronauts will live during missions into deep space Source:

A Massive cylindrical housing may one day adopt four astronauts sent into deep space. Lockheed Martin showed how could look like such dwelling, on Thursday at Space center. Kennedy, where the aerospace giant's contract with NASA is developing a prototype residential environments. Lockheed is one of six contractors (including Boeing, Sierra Nevada Space Systems, Orbital ATK, NanoRacks and Bigelow Aerospace), which received a total of $ 65 million from NASA for the construction of the prototype before the end of the year. Then the Agency will examine proposals to get a better understanding of the system and interfaces, which we will need for life in deep space.

The Lockheed Design uses multi-purpose logistics module Donatello, the updated module of the era of the space Shuttle that was built to transport cargo to the International space station. But Donatello never sent into space, and the module is now transformed into the prototype Lockheed.

Where will live astronauts?

Cylindrical capsule with a width of approximately 5 and 7 metres long, about the size of a small bus. But the four astronauts who will live in it 30 or 60 days, it will be tight. The capsule is designed to accommodate research racks, life support systems, stations of sleep, exercise equipment and robotic workstations, says bill Pratt, program Manager.

"Imagine the trailer in deep space," he says. "When you trailer, your Desk becomes your bed, and things are constantly moving, so you need to use space efficiently. A lot we're working on it".

The Team used augmented reality headset, which impose real hardware using the simulation to visualize the capsule. This saves time and helps Lockheed to catch errors at an early stage.

Another cost saving measure: the reuse of Donatello.

"We want to get to the moon and Mars as quickly as possible, and we think that we have enough tools to make that happen," says Pratt, adding that the repurposing of materials has become a big topic in Lockheed.

The habitat is part of a larger mission for the delivery of crews to the moon and Mars. The final version of the capsule will be attached to Deep Space Gateway spaceport, which will orbit the moon and to serve as a starting point for missions to explore outer space.

The Astronauts will depart on designed for deep space but not yet ready spacecraft "Orion", with the help of the Space Launch System, which NASA considers "most powerful rocket" in history. Gateway will be much less than the 450-ton International space station. 75 tons of fit housing, a gateway, propulsion module, a dock port and a power node.

Work on the "Orion" is, and it is expected that the unmanned mission to orbit the moon (Eploration Mission-1) to be implemented by 2020. Exploration Mission-2, which will return the crew to lunar orbit scheduled for mid-2022.

In the Comic center. Kennedy now made heat shields for the Orion. Development of the spacecraft has been underway since 2004. Long development time is mainly due to the requirements of the spacecraft to exit in deep space and harsh conditions that he will encounter during the 1000-day trip to Mars. For example, NASA requires that the crew module of Orion had zero welding defects, while even in the "Apollo" was allowed a certain number of defects per inch.

"This is infrastructure for sustainable space exploration by the people, so you need to consider every scenario that could arise. That is why the requirements are so strict," said Lisa Callahan, Vice President and General Manager of the commercial division of the civil program Lockheed Martin.

Now, Lockheed is preparing to go to the finish line. Next month the European space Agency will present to the European service module, which will be located below the crew module in the "Orion", and with it begins the final stage of development.
